Drei Sugay is back with a new single “Wag Na Lang,” a love track that looks back on the fond moments of falling in love that is set to drop this Friday (Oct. 18).
He composed the song inspired by the musicals he watched and starred in.
“It was partly inspired by the musicals, sarsuwelas, and musical theater in general. Musical theater has a unique way of lyric phrasing, and I tried to capture that feeling sa pagsulat ng song na ito. Couple that with Kundiman vibes, OPM ballad, and rock styling, and I came up with this song,” said Drei, who was recently nominated as New Male Recording Artist of the Year at the 16th PMPC Star Awards for Music.
For Drei, what makes “Wag Na Lang” special is that it offers something new from his usual alternative rock songs. “It’s a step back from my usual alt-rock compositions, as it passes as a ballad. Though may ibang atake, it is connected to all of my songs. It’s one of the stages of the love story created from my previous and future releases.”
“Wag Na Lang” was produced by StarPop label head Roque “Rox” Santos.
In 2023, Drei released his debut single “Ganun Talaga” which has earned more than 600,000 streams on Spotify. He continued to show his musicality with singles such as “Iyong Mga Mata,” “Aking Tangi,” and “idk anymore.”
The rising Kapamilya artist was known as one of the young talents from “The Voice Teens Philippines” season 2 where he was coached by Filipino-American artist Apl.de.Ap. He also joined the second season of “Idol Philippines” and finished among the top 12 artists of the competition.
“The most valuable lesson I learned through my journey so far is to put your head down, work in silence, and enjoy the process. No drama, no negativity, just keep grinding,” Drei shared.
