Filipina vocalist Raki Vega, the first Filipino to receive The Walt Disney Legacy Award, shared her inspiring story on the latest episode of ‘Toni Talks’ on October 20.

Vega discussed her early life in Mandaue City, Cebu, and her path to international recognition.

Growing up in a nipa hut for 12 years, Vega recounted the simplicity of her childhood but emphasized the love and music that filled their home.

“We may not grow up with fancy stuff po but I believe that we had everything,” she said, describing the happiness and resilience instilled by her family. She also shared how her mother played a pivotal role in nurturing her talent, teaching her to sing from a young age.

Vega’s journey to success was not without challenges. She recalled times when her family struggled financially, surviving on simple meals due to her father’s job as a landscaper. Despite these hardships, Vega pursued her dreams, winning the reality singing competition ‘Born Diva’ in 2004.

She went on to release an album under Star Records and collaborated with artists like Christian Bautista and Martin Nievera.
