REVIEW: ‘Wicked,’ a dazzling adaptation that defies expectations

Jon M. Chu’s long-awaited adaptation of ‘Wicked’ finally lands on the big screen, and it’s a visual and emotional spectacle that largely justifies its two-part structure.

This cinematic take on the beloved Broadway musical offers stunning production design, powerhouse performances, and a renewed sense of magic, delivering a treat for both die-hard fans and newcomers alike.

L to R: Cynthia Erivo is Elphaba and Ariana Grande is Glinda in WICKED, directed by Jon M. Chu

Ariana Grande’s portrayal of Glinda is nothing short of remarkable. Known for her pop superstar credentials, Grande transitions seamlessly into the world of Oz, bringing depth, wit, and impeccable comedic timing to the bubbly yet complex character. Her performance of ‘Popular’ is a standout moment, exuding charm and energy, while her subtle delivery of Glinda’s emotional nuances leaves a lasting impression. Grande’s magnetic presence makes her a strong contender for awards season recognition, with many calling this the role she was born to play.

Cynthia Erivo anchors the film with her heartfelt portrayal of Elphaba, the misunderstood “wicked” witch. Her soaring vocals breathe new life into iconic numbers like ‘Defying Gravity,’ while her nuanced performance captures Elphaba’s vulnerability and resilience. Erivo’s ability to portray both the strength and sorrow of her character is captivating, ensuring Elphaba remains the emotional core of the film. However, given the fierce competition in the Best Actress race this year, Erivo’s chances for an Oscar nod may hinge on the film’s overall awards momentum.

Stunning Visuals and Lavish Production. The land of Oz has never looked this good on screen. Production designer Nathan Crowley (Interstellar, Dunkirk) crafts a world that is both familiar and fresh, blending the whimsical charm of the Broadway show with cinematic grandeur. From the vibrant Emerald City to the darker, more intimate corners of Elphaba’s story, every frame is visually arresting. Costume designer Paul Tazewell (West Side Story) outdoes himself with intricate and eye-catching designs, while the makeup and hairstyling teams deliver iconic looks, particularly Elphaba’s vivid green skin and Glinda’s ethereal blonde curls.

The visual effects are equally impressive, from flying monkeys to the magical trains crisscrossing Oz. These elements enhance the storytelling without overwhelming it, though some scenes lean toward being overly busy, echoing critiques of Disney’s live-action remakes.

The decision to split ‘Wicked’ into two films is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it allows for deeper character exploration and the addition of director Jon M. Chu’s creative flourishes. On the other hand, it occasionally feels overlong, with moments that could have been trimmed for a tighter narrative. While this choice may frustrate some viewers, it ultimately provides a richer experience for those willing to immerse themselves in Oz.

Musical Moments to Remember. The film captures the spirit of Wicked’s unforgettable score, giving fans the chance to see their favorite songs reimagined for the screen. From the comedic energy of ‘Popular’ to the powerful anthem of ‘Defying Gravity,’ each number is elevated by Chu’s dynamic direction. The ability to change locations, incorporate sweeping camera movements, and enhance performances with visual effects makes the musical sequences a joy to watch.

‘Wicked’ Part One sets a high bar for its sequel, due in 2025. With rumors of new songs from Stephen Schwartz and the continuation of Elphaba and Glinda’s journey, the second installment promises even more magic. For now, the first chapter offers an enchanting blend of nostalgia and innovation, reminding audiences why Wicked has remained a cultural phenomenon.

LionhearTV‘s Verdict. Wicked is a triumphant adaptation that breathes new life into the Broadway classic. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo shine as the film’s leads, supported by stunning visuals and thoughtful direction. While its two-part structure might feel excessive for some, the film’s heart and spectacle more than make up for its shortcomings. Whether you’re a devoted fan of the musical or a newcomer to the world of Oz, ‘Wicked’ promises a spellbinding experience that will leave you eagerly awaiting its conclusion.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars | A cinematic spectacle that honors its Broadway roots while forging a path all its own.
