A new all-original Filipino musical, ‘Pilato’, is set to make its debut this April at the PETA Theater Center, bringing a fresh perspective on the trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ through the eyes of Pontius Pilate.
The production, which seeks to explore the elusive nature of truth in today’s world, is written and directed by Eldrin Veloso.
The musical will premiere on April 4, 2025, with additional performances scheduled on April 5, 6, 11, 12, and 13.
At a press conference, Veloso revealed that the inspiration for Pilato stemmed from observing a senakulo (Passion play) where Pilate’s role was notably extended. This prompted questions about Pilate’s historical guilt and significance.
“We asked ourselves, ‘Is Pilate really guilty of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ?’ We’re not trying to stir any controversy, but that sparked a deeper examination of his character,” Veloso said.
He also cited the Apostles’ Creed, which mentions Pilate alongside the Virgin Mary, as another source of inspiration.
“Pilate’s role in history is complex. If we place blame on him for the crucifixion, does that paradoxically absolve him, since the crucifixion became the cornerstone of Christianity?” Veloso asked. “This led us to explore new angles of a story we thought we knew.”
The narrative traces Pilate’s rise from a young man with ambitions in Rome to his appointment as the prefect of Judea, a province rife with political and religious tension. The musical portrays his moral struggles as he faces intense pressure from various characters, including Caiaphas, the scheming high priest; his insightful wife Procla; the historian Josepo; and the mysterious Hesus, rumored to be the King of the Jews.
Through captivating music and powerful performances, ‘Pilato’ seeks to shed light on the complexities of truth, power, and accountability, asking whether Pilate’s decisions were shaped by personal conviction or external forces.
With the Holy Week approaching and the Philippines gearing up for the 2025 elections, Pilato offers a timely reflection on truth’s many faces. Veloso emphasized that the production speaks to today’s post-truth era, where misinformation and moral dilemmas are rampant.
“Information comes to us in countless ways. But how do we discern what’s true? Would we even recognize the truth if we saw it?” Veloso pondered. “This musical aims to delve into the many layers of truth and how they impact our lives.”
Pilato boasts an ensemble of veteran performers and rising talents, promising audiences a thought-provoking and emotional journey. The production marks a major theatrical project for The Corner Studio, which is making waves for its innovative storytelling approach.
The world premiere of ‘Pilato’ will take place on April 4, 2025, at 8 PM at the PETA Theater Center. Additional performances will be held on April 5, 6, 11, 12, and 13, with shows at both 3 PM and 8 PM.
