Actress and singer Nadine Lustre has formally filed a complaint for the violation of the Safe Spaces Act following what her camp described as “relentless and malicious attacks” she has faced on social media.
The complaint, lodged on May 21, comes after months of online harassment allegedly stemming from Lustre’s Instagram activity, particularly her resharing of a post perceived to celebrate the possible arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte by the International Criminal Court. The post quickly drew criticism from pro-Duterte netizens, some of whom hurled personal attacks and wished harm upon the actress.
Incoming ML Partylist Representative Leila de Lima—whom Lustre publicly supported during the recent midterm elections—issued a statement standing firmly behind the actress.
“We at ML Partylist express full support for Nadine Lustre as she files a complaint for violation of the Safe Spaces Act in response to the relentless and malicious attacks she has endured,” said De Lima on her official social media account.
De Lima emphasized the importance of Lustre’s legal action amid a digital environment that she says is increasingly weaponized to silence those advocating for justice and reform.
“This is a necessary step in a time when social media is being used to silence voices that speak for justice and reform. Ginagamit ang mga plataporma para buwagin ang makabuluhang diskurso at palitan ito ng galit at paninira,” she stated.
While details of the complaint and the individuals being held accountable have yet to be disclosed, De Lima argued that the misuse of social media cannot be dismissed as mere opinion.
“Marami sa mga lumalabas sa social media ngayon ay hindi maituturing na opinyon. These are part of a deliberate effort to harass, discredit, and instill fear. May masamang intensyon. May malinaw na layunin na patahimikin ang mga tumitindig.”

De Lima also called on authorities to take online harassment more seriously.
“We support Nadine. Her case is a stand for truth and accountability. Make no mistake: we will push back against this kind of behavior. Hindi ito katanggap-tanggap. Hindi ito dapat palampasin.”
She ended her message with a note of encouragement for the embattled actress:
“Maraming salamat, Nadine, sa tapang at paninindigan. Sa bawat hakbang mo, mas lumalakas ang laban para sa isang makatao, makatarungan, at demokratikong lipunan.”
As of writing, Lustre has not yet released an official statement regarding the filing or clarified who the complaint specifically targets.
