The steamy queer romance series ‘Heated Rivalry’ is quickly gaining traction among Filipino viewers, mirroring its rapid rise as one of the most talked-about international shows of the season.

All six episodes of ‘Heated Rivalry’ are now streaming on HBO Max, following its rollout to the Philippine market. Even before its local availability was officially announced, the series had already begun generating buzz on social media, with memes and fan discussions circulating widely—particularly among BL and LGBTQ+ content audiences.
The series centers on the complicated romance between rival professional hockey players Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie). While they face off on the ice as members of opposing teams, their relationship gradually develops off the rink, evolving from a secret affair into a deeper emotional connection. The story explores themes of ambition, masculinity, public image, and the personal cost of love in a highly competitive sports environment.
Based on Rachel Reid’s ‘Game Changers’ novel series, ‘Heated Rivalry’ has earned widespread critical acclaim for its authentic portrayal of LGBTQ+ relationships and its emotionally grounded storytelling. The show currently holds a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, bolstered by praise for its performances, writing, and high production values.
Since its premiere in late November, Williams and Storrie have emerged as breakout stars. The two actors have made multiple media appearances, including a guesting on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’, and have become fixtures in awards-season conversations. Their popularity has extended beyond LGBTQ+ audiences, drawing in a large female viewership as well.
The series’ cultural impact was underscored when it was referenced during comedian Chelsea Handler’s monologue at the recent Critics Choice Awards. It has also been confirmed that Williams and Storrie will make their awards-season debut as presenters at the 2026 Golden Globe Awards, to be held at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. Their co-star François Arnaud also appeared as a presenter at the Critics Choice Awards.
In terms of viewership, ‘Heated Rivalry’ has set records internationally. In Canada, it is now the most-watched original series ever on Bell Media’s Crave streaming service. In the United States, it ranks as HBO Max’s top-rated non-animated acquired series since the platform’s 2020 launch and is among the top five scripted debuts on the service this year.
Despite its success, fans may have to wait before a second season arrives. In an interview with Variety, show creator Jacob Tierney shared that new episodes have yet to be written, pushing back production timelines. However, he confirmed that future seasons will continue to follow the source material and focus on the evolving relationship between Shane and Ilya.
The success of ‘Heated Rivalry’ also reflects a broader global trend: the growing mainstream appeal of male-male romance stories, a genre with deep roots in fan fiction, manga, and online communities. Following earlier hits like ‘Heartstopper’ and ‘Red, White & Royal Blue’, ‘Heated Rivalry’ stands out for its more mature tone and unfiltered emotional intensity.
For now, Filipino viewers can stream all six episodes of ‘Heated Rivalry’ on HBO Max, as the series continues to cement its status as one of the most unexpected—and talked-about—streaming hits of the year.
