‘Bagets The Musical’ Review: A Nostalgic Barkada Story That Still Resonates Today

Nostalgia is a powerful force, and ‘Bagets The Musical’ taps into it with charm, humor, and heartfelt moments that bring a beloved coming-of-age story to life onstage.

Based on the iconic Filipino film, the musical revisits the lives of five teenage friends—Gilbert, Tonton, Adie, Arnel, and Topee—each representing a different facet of adolescence. From friendship and dreams to family expectations and the awkward realities of growing up, their stories reflect the universal journey of youth.

For audiences who grew up in the 1980s, the show feels like revisiting a collective memory. But even for younger viewers, the themes remain relatable. The pressures, insecurities, and life lessons that define adolescence transcend generations.

Standout Performances. The production thrives on its barkada dynamic, with the young cast capturing the playful yet emotional chemistry that anchors the story.

KD Estrada and Sam Shoaf prove to be effective theater performers, bringing sincerity and energy to their roles. Their presence onstage contributes to the musical’s lively rhythm, balancing the comedic and dramatic moments that define the narrative.

Andres Muhlach also delivers an endearing performance. His youthful charm is evident, and as the show progresses, his growing confidence onstage becomes noticeable.

Among the standout performances is Carla Guevarra Laforteza, who plays Virgie, Adie’s mother. Her commanding stage presence shines through every scene she appears in, delivering emotional depth that anchors the youthful storyline.

Meanwhile, Kakai Bautista provides comic relief with her signature wit and well-timed punchlines, adding levity to the production’s more sentimental moments.

Music and Nostalgia. One of the musical’s strongest elements is its use of classic songs associated with the original film. Tracks such as ‘Growing Up,’ ‘So It’s You,’ and ‘Farewell’ evoke a sense of nostalgia that resonates deeply with audiences familiar with the story.

These musical moments serve as emotional markers in the characters’ journeys—from the excitement of first love to the pain of heartbreak and the lessons that come with growing up.

The set design also contributes to the show’s immersive quality, creating a dynamic stage environment that reflects the vibrant spirit of the era.

Directed by Maribel Legarda, with a book by J-Mee Katanyag, music by Vince Lim, and choreography by JM Cabling, the production successfully blends storytelling, music, and movement to capture the youthful spirit of the original material.

Still Feels Relevant. While ‘Bagets The Musical’ thrives on nostalgia, it also touches on deeper themes about adolescence.

Growing up is often the stage of life where expectations begin to take shape. It is when young people grapple with identity, relationships, and societal ideas about adulthood and masculinity.

The musical subtly reflects these realities, showing how the characters navigate the pressure to grow up before they are truly ready.

Even within its distinctly ‘80s setting, the emotional struggles faced by the boys remain surprisingly familiar in today’s world.

LionhearTV Verdict. ‘Bagets The Musical’ succeeds in bringing a beloved Filipino coming-of-age story to a new generation while giving longtime fans a chance to relive its magic.

With engaging performances, nostalgic music, and a story anchored in friendship and self-discovery, the production delivers an entertaining theatrical experience that balances humor and heartfelt moments.

More than just a nostalgic trip, the musical serves as a reminder that the journey of growing up—with all its awkwardness, lessons, and unforgettable friendships—is something everyone can relate to.

For theatergoers looking for a lively throwback filled with barkada energy and emotional resonance, ‘Bagets The Musical’ offers a fun and memorable ride down memory lane.

Our viewing of ‘Bagets The Musical’ was made even more special thanks to Sun Life, which served as one of the sponsors of the production. The company also graciously invited members of the media, including LionhearTV, to experience the show firsthand. Through this initiative, Sun Life continues to support local arts and culture by helping bring Filipino stories to the stage and connecting audiences to meaningful theater experiences.
