Plantation Prime is quietly redefining Filipino canned food culture

There’s something quietly revolutionary happening inside the production facility of Plantation Prime — the kind of revolution that smells like simmering peanut sauce, coconut cream, and home-cooked Filipino comfort sealed inside a can.

Tucked within a facility powered by ISO-certified operations and backed by HALAL compliance, Plantation Prime is steadily changing perceptions about what Filipino canned goods can be. More than simply offering convenience, the brand is positioning itself as a gateway to authentic Filipino flavors that can travel across borders without losing their soul.

At the center of this growing food brand is Managing Director Brian Noel, who revealed that the company’s launch happened at an unexpectedly perfect time.

“It was actually conceptualized a few months before the pandemic,” Noel shared. “It just so happened that our license to operate from the FDA came out during the pandemic, so that’s when we were first able to provide it to the general public.”

What initially could have been a difficult launch period eventually became the company’s biggest opportunity. During the height of lockdowns, when restaurants closed and families searched for comforting ready-to-eat meals at home, Plantation Prime found its niche.

“If the pandemic didn’t happen, we would have done it the same time anyway,” Noel explained. “But I guess it was also timely that during the pandemic, people were looking for anything unusual, anything ready to eat, because you’re not able to go around to your favorite restaurant. With this, we were able to bring that part of your dining experience to the comfort of your own home.”

Unlike traditional canned food brands that focus on staples like corned beef or luncheon meat, Plantation Prime intentionally chose a different direction.

“We are not doing the traditional canned goods like corned beef, luncheon meat. We will leave that to the bigger players — that’s a market we will not be competing on,” Noel said.

Instead, the company focused on Filipino dishes that are often difficult and time-consuming to prepare from scratch, including Kare-Kare and Bicol Express. The result is a lineup of ready-to-eat products that retain the identity and complexity of beloved Filipino cuisine while remaining accessible and convenient.

For Plantation Prime, however, the vision goes beyond the Philippine market. The company is also targeting overseas Filipinos longing for familiar flavors from home.

“Being unique brings us to our ready-to-eat Filipino favorites… at least we are able to bring it to areas where the global Filipinos are,” Noel shared. “We are bringing it to the Middle East, where we have a lot of Filipino brothers and sisters that we want to be able to share what home feels like. They’ve been there long enough — we want to give them a taste of home through our Plantation Prime favorites.”

Despite launching only in 2020, the company has already reached several milestones. Plantation Prime is now HALAL-certified, ISO-certified, and exporting products internationally — achievements Noel admits came faster than expected for a startup brand.

“We’re actually going on our sixth year, and I guess we are also proud that even though we only started in 2020, we are already HALAL-certified and ISO-certified. A little after two or three years, we are already able to start exporting — which I’m proud to say is a bit fast for a startup,” he said.

Today, Plantation Prime products are available in Australia and several countries in the Middle East, with the company preparing to expand even further.

Its latest move includes receiving FDA certification for a HALAL-vegan Masala product, signaling a major step toward entering new categories and markets, including the United States, where demand for Filipino products continues to grow.

Locally, the brand is steadily strengthening its retail presence. Plantation Prime products are currently available in Landmark groceries, selected Marketplace and Shopwise stores, and One World Deli in Metro Manila, as well as Metro Groceries and selected Robinsons and Marketplace branches in Cebu.

Six years since its launch, Plantation Prime’s mission remains simple: encourage more people to try something different. And according to the team behind the brand, the response has been consistently encouraging from everyone who already has.
