Vice Ganda used his platform to express his own opinion on poverty in the Philippines. He answered a question from the segment, Miss Q and A during the September 12 episode of It’s Showtime.
“Kung mahirap ka noon at mas lalong mahirap ka ngayon sino ang sisisihin mo?”
It’s Showtime co-host Anne Curtis praised the contestants’ opinions. Vice, however, shared his own input.
“Parehas sila ng opinion na ang sisisihin ay ang sarili nila. Ako, hindi… Alam mo, ganyan din ako dati. Sinasabi ko na, kung mahirap ka tapos lalo kang humirap or namatay kang mahirap, kasalanan mo. Pero ako ngayon, sa dami ng napapanuod at nababasa ko, nasasabi ko na hindi na rin laging kasalanan nung tao… Kasi maraming pagkakataon na kaya ka lalong humihirap kasi you are being deprived of opportunities.”
Vice continued to cite examples.
“Imagine-in mo ‘yung mga magsasaka. Hindi sila tamad! Nagsasaka sila araw-araw, nagpapakahirap sila maya’t maya. Pero bakit ‘di sila umaasenso? Kasi, habang nagiipon sila, hindi pa nila naiipon ‘yung target nila, tumataas na naman ang presyo. So, imbes na maka-ipon sila, nauubos ‘yung naiipon nila. ‘Yung mga nagtitinda ng taho, ng fishball. Araw-araw nagtatrabaho sila, they work hard. Hindi sila tamad pero they are being deprived of opportunities.”
Vice then mentioned that there may be a right to education but the cost of education is higher than it should be.
“Katulad nalang ng edukasyon, diba sinasabi na mayroong right for education sa Pilipinas? Pero, bakit ang mahal naman ng edukasyon? Eh, ‘di nga nila ma-afford. So, nagtatrabaho sila pero ‘di nga talaga nila ma-afford. Kaya diba, they are being deprived of opportunities. Kaya para sa akin, hindi laging masisisi ang tao. Masisisi at masisisi mo rin ang lipunan at gobyerno.”
Pay it forward.
Vice noted that it is an obligation for those who have more money to help others.
“Kung ikaw naman ang nakakaluwag-luwag, obligasyon mo na… ‘Obligasyon ba ng mayaman na tumulong sa mahirap?’ Sinasabi nila, hindi. Pero para sa akin, oo. Obligasyon mo. Kasi kung ano man ‘yung meron ka ngayon, hindi yan lahat para sa iyo. ‘Yung iba dinaan lang sayo ng Diyos para ipamigay mo.”
Shekainah Mae Chen rebukes.
Shekainah Mae Chen, a YouTube personality, posted a tweet about the said matter. The tweet read:
“Bakit ba may thinking sa Pinas na pag may pera ka, obligasyon mo tumulong sa mahirap? Sorry pero pet-peeve ko yung mga pabuhat. Hindi ko ugaling tumulong sa mahirap kasi pinalaki akong tinuturuan paano mangisda kesa humingi ng isda so yun icocontribute ko.”
She turned her Twitter account to private after receiving backlash for the said tweet.
