ABS-CBN executives ask GMA Network to step up with their reporting

Several ABS-CBN executives have taken to social media to ask GMA Network to step up and report more about the government’s inefficiencies and its obvious moves to silence critics.

In a Facebook post, Star Music executive Jonathan Manalo asked the Kapuso network to follow their news department’s own mantra “Walang Kinikilingan, Walang Pino-proteksyonan, Serbisyong Totoo Lamang!” in reporting about the ABS-CBN franchise issue.

“GMA7, I think this is the perfect time to step up and expose the oppressive ways of this government. Damay na kayo dito sa PDR issues. ABS-CBN lang ang nakikipaglaban ngayon. But you chose to remain silent and not mention in your news features that GMA7 also has PDRs issued to foreigners (which is allowed by law and legally implemented by SEC anyway). The government is clearly attacking media institutions. Tama na ang playing safe, please make the right decisions before it’s too late.”

Manalo was specifically pertaining to the issue of PDRs which is being used against ABS-CBN in its franchise renewal.

GMA Network had also issued PDRs but it wasn’t used against them during their franchise renewal.

However, in reporting about the ABS-CBN issue on PDRs, GMA Network removed itself from the picture by not reporting about their own PDRs.

That was noticed by former GMA reporter Ralf Rivas sharing on his tweet his disappointment over GMA’s lack of fairness in completely reporting about the matter.

“GMA reported about ABS-CBN selling PDRs, citing only Rappler’s case and totally leaving out the detail that GMA sells PDRs as well. And Rappler has no PDRs anymore, another detail that was not reported. I’m really restraining myself as former GMA employee but come on naman.”

Rappler reporter Lian Buan also noticed how GMA News missed reporting their own PDRs with regards to ABS-CBN’s issue. Rappler has also faced an issue with their PDRs.

“Even further, the PDRs of GMA and ABS-CBN have the same language 🙂 So if ABS-CBN’s PDR will be disallowed, then same goes for GMA. Complete the story.”

Another netizen meanwhile asked why GMA Network was able to secure their franchise without any problem given that the issues being hurled against ABS-CBN are also being practiced by the Kapuso network.

“More than 50 years na ang GMA-7, may PDRs din tulad ng sa ABS-CBN, at meron din pala silang GMA Affordabox na kapareho sa mahiwagang black box ng ABS-CBN. May labor case din ito. Magsasampa na rin ba ang tanggapan ni SolGen ng Quo Warranto at lalabanan ni Marcoleta ang GMA-7?”

Aside from Manalo, another ABS-CBN executive Rox Santos also called on GMA Network for a fair and complete reporting on the ABS-CBN franchise issue.

Rox also reminded the Kapuso network to live up to their news department’s slogan about unbiased news.

“Paalala sa GMA7, sabi n’yo nga ‘di ba dapat – Walang kinikilingan, walang pinoprotektahan! Walang kasinungalingan, serbisyong totoo lamang. Pakita naman kayo ng tapang at paninindigan! BEKE NEMEN!”

Roxy Liquigan, another ABS-CBN executive meanwhile chided GMA Network for being silent with regards to the PDR issue.

“May nananahimik sa paligid. Ayaw mapag usapan ang PDRs. Pero Pag FICTAP noon, ke bilis bilis.”

Meanwhile, in a statement, GMA Network maintained that their PDRs are legal and compliant with all regulations set by the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Philippine Stocks Exchange.
