MANILA, PHILIPPINES, June 7, 2021–The National Privacy Commission’s 4th Privacy Awareness Week Awards named the Safe Space: A Kid’s Guide to Data Privacy children’s learning material as the Privacy Initiative of 2021. This was published by The Center for Art, New Ventures & Sustainable Development (CANVAS) and commissioned by Globe Telecom with additional support from Google.

The 60-page activity book aims to educate Filipino kids how to use and enjoy the internet in a safe and responsible way. It covers several topics such as creating secure passwords, surfing the internet safely, and protecting personal information online among others. To engage its target readers and simplify complex topics, the publication features fun games including word search, and drawing and coloring activities.

“The National Privacy Commission congratulates all the winners of this year’s Privacy Awareness Week Awards. We laud the efforts of Globe, CANVAS, and Google to teach children how to use the internet safely. The ‘Safe Space: A Kid’s Guide to Data Privacy’ activity book furthers the Commission’s goal to uphold digital responsibility in the country. It is a good example on how organizations can work closely together towards educating kids and families about internet citizenship and online safety,” said Raymund Liboro, National Privacy Commissioner.

“We are honored to be recognized by the National Privacy Commission. Publishing the children’s activity book together with partners CANVAS and Google is a reflection of our commitment to helping raise a new generation of digitally responsible citizens. The Philippines’ digital economy is one of the fastest growing in the region and more Filipinos and families are getting online. Now more than ever, we need to teach people how to use the internet in a healthy and responsible way while enjoying its wonderful benefits,” shared Atty. Irish Salandanan-Almeida, Globe’s Data Protection Officer.

“CANVAS is very proud that our children’s activity book ‘Safe Space: A Kid’s Guide to Data Privacy’ has been awarded as the Privacy Initiative of 2021 by the National Privacy Commission of the Philippines. The pandemic has accelerated the use of and developments in information technology. With it, the need to understand and appreciate the value of data privacy, especially among children, has also risen dramatically. We are thankful to Globe Telecom and Google for their support which, in addition to enabling the development of the book, will also provide thousands of children in public schools and disadvantaged communities with their very own copies of this activity book on data privacy,” said Gigo Alampay, CANVAS Founder and Executive Director.

“We congratulate Globe and CANVAS on winning the Privacy Initiative of 2021. We are grateful for the opportunity to support the children’s activity book about digital responsibility. Google is committed to leading Filipinos towards a safer internet and helping build a more privacy-focused online world. Our partnership with Globe and CANVAS is one of the many ways we’re delivering on this commitment beyond building innovative products, and placing progressive policies and guidelines. We will continue to work with our partners and the broader community to make the internet safer, more secure, and more accessible for everyone,” shared Yves Gonzalez, Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy of Google Philippines.
