Noel Cabangon on DOST-NCRP’s Mapping of Pinoy Music Industry: says it’s high time

On October 15, Filipino folk singer and composer Noel Cabangon shared his thoughts on the Department of Science and Technology’s efforts in Mapping the Philippine Music Industry.

During the media conference for the First AmiananPop Songwriting Festival, Cabangon noted that the Philippines falls behind other countries in producing a directory for music.

“Mahalaga ‘yung mapping ng Filipino music dahil wala pa talaga tayo nun. Hindi natin talaga alam kung ano talaga ‘yung mga music sa Mindanao. Nagbago na eh, ang dami ng nangyari. It’s already 2021 and actually, medyo huli na talaga tayo. And, it’s high time that we lobby this mapping.”

Cabangon highlighted the importance of having a “directory” for the creatives in the music industry in the country.

“I’ve heard of that one. It’s the mapping of Filipino music. I think it’s very important na magkaroon na talaga tayo ng mapping ng Filipino Music.

“Kasi this is a part of the creative industry and music is a part of the creative industry. Para malaman na rin natin ‘yung mga–para magkaroon na rin tayo ng directory.

“What are the songs in the various regions of the country. And sino ‘yung mga composers? Sino ‘yung mga lumilikha we need to know the crafters of all of these pieces.”

Cabangon expressed his support for DOST-NCRP’s new policy research study, “MusikaPilipinas: Research and Mapping Towards Understanding, Scoping, and Defining the Philippine Music Industry.”

“Sa OPM, we are very much in support of this endeavor. I think it’s part of the bill that’s going to be–that’s being in congress and senate.”

Earlier, the DOST’s National Research Council of the Philippines announced their new policy research study, “MusikaPilipinas: Research and Mapping Towards Understanding, Scoping, and Defining the Philippine Music Industry,” to map out the Philippine Music Industry.

As for Cabangon, he joins AmiananPop Music Inc in mounting the First AmiananPop Songwriting Festival. It aims to promote the music from Northern Luzon dialects, and it currently has ten finalists. The competition proper happens on December 4, 2021.
