KathNiel, Mae Cruz-Alviar explain the need for ‘2 Good 2 Be True’ to end despite its success

The series continues to dominate on Netflix Philippines’ top TV shows chart since its debut in May this year.

The series 2 Good 2 Be True, Netflix Philippines’ no.1 show, wants to end on a high note. That is what the directors and lead cast members Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla made sure the press and the public understand when they held the finale media conference, on October 25.

The series will complete its successful Netflix-run on November 8, and on free TV, on November 11.

Speaking to the press, the series’ lead director Mae Cruz-Alviar, explained why the series needs to end. She compared it to a relationship that needs to be terminated albeit still feeling great.

“Kung baga sa relasyon, okay naman kayo, masaya kayo in all, and why end something good. But then ‘di ba, maganda naman na you end with a bang? You end on a high note, rather than I-stretch nang I-stretch. Mararamdaman naman ng audience ‘yun.

“(It’s like when you are in a relationship. You guys are still happy and all—I mean, why end something good, right? But then it feels better when you just end something good with a bang. You end on a high note rather than stretching the story. The audience would know that).

“It’s good na na-max out namin, kung baga sapat s’ya. Puwede pa, but then, siguro it’s better na we end it here habang masaya pa at hindi parang stretched. We’re very happy to people are saying…nakakataba ng puso kapag sinsasabing puwede pang mag-extend. But right now, this is where it should end at masaya kami na we’re ending on a high note.

“(It’s good we’re able to maximize everything; we could have stretched it a little bit, but it feels better if we end it right here when we’re still happy, and things are not stretched. We’re happy hearing people wish—it feels good when they say they want it extended. But right now this is where it needs to end, and we’re happy that it does on a high note).”

Director Paco Sta. Maria seconded Cruz-Alviar, saying “Every good journey and every good start has an end.“

Bernardo, meanwhile, noted the contract they signed with the streaming mammoth, Netflix, as one of the reasons why the series needs to end.

“Sa akin naman, aside siguro dahil sa kontrata sa Netflix na 130 episodes, so we can’t extend. As much as we want to, kasi nga meron kaming magandang show, lahat eh… every story talaga kailangang mag-end.

“(For me, aside from the fact that we only committed to deliver 130 episodes to Netflix, every story really needs to end).”

She also pointed out how viewers these days are now smart that they would easily know if the show is just being extended to make as many episodes as possible.

“So I think, eto, yung 130, is enough kasi nakita ‘yung journey ng lahat ng characters, ‘yung flashbacks, mga backstory and all, na itinahi’ yung story sa present time.

“(I really think the 130 episodes are enough. We were able to show everything, the journey of the characters, through flashbacks, and back story, so we could weave their stories to the present time).”

She expressed how hard it was for them to let go of the show.

“Mahirap bitawan ‘yung show, sa totoo lang, lalo na ngayon gamay na namin ang isa’t isa at parang nagja-jive na lahat, but then ayaw naming ipilit, and I think eto na eh, we just watched the finale and naisip ko ‘yung sinasabi ko na it’s enough na talaga.

“(It’s hard to let go of the show, especially now that we’ve learned to jive with each other already. But then, we really we really don’t want to insist. We just saw the finale episode and I thought, it was enough already).”

Her reel-and-real partner Daniel Padilla, who nodded his head the whole time while Bernardo was speaking, just said, “Yes tama lahat ng sinabi ‘ho niya (Everything she said was right).”

2 Good 2 Be True is currently airing on TV5, A2Z, and Kapamilya Channel. Online, it streams via Kapamilya Online Live on Facebook and YouTube, and iWantTFC. Advanced episodes are available on iWantTFC and Netflix, for 48 and 72 hours, respectively, ahead of their free TV airing.
