Matteo Guidicelli sparks debate on repaying parents for upbringing costs

A recent video by Atty. Chel Diokno discussing whether successful children should financially repay their parents for the costs of raising them has ignited a significant debate in the Philippines.

Diokno argued that parenting should not be viewed as a transaction requiring repayment, emphasizing that the love and sacrifice of parents are given without expectation of compensation.

He suggested that the true reward for parents is seeing their children succeed and be happy, and that future generations should continue this cycle of love.

Actor Matteo Guidicelli weighed in on the conversation, expressing his interest in the topic on social media.

“Saw this last night and it’s something that really has to be talked about. What do you think?” Guidicelli posted. He further acknowledged the importance of the discussion, saying, “Thank you for this Atty. A very important topic!”

The actor’s views gained traction when a netizen suggested that while helping parents is commendable, it should not be seen as an obligation. Guidicelli supported this stance, commenting, “True, good to help not a problem and forever be thankful but it shouldn’t be an obligation.”

However, some critics argue that the video might be interpreted as condoning a lack of support for parents from their children. They stress the importance of not neglecting familial responsibilities and maintaining strong, supportive relationships with one’s parents.
