Although Joey de Leon already has a damaged reputation, Paolo Ballesteros still defended him. Joey had made an insensitive joke about depression not being real in October 2017.
More recently, Joey also made an insensitive joke towards a former prostitute in February 2018. Both instances also happened to a Sugod Bahay winner for their segment Juan for All All for Juan.
In the premiere night of Amnesia Love, Paolo stated that he understood that not all people can grasp Joey’s humor. He also added that Joey had quick wit when it comes to jokes like these.
“Yung ibang tao naman kasi, siyempre, hindi nila mage-gets kung halimbawa, first time nilang napanood ‘yung Bulaga, ‘di ba? Alam niyo naman si Joey de Leon, ma-ano ang utak niyan, eh ‘di ba? Henyo nga ‘yan, eh. Mabilis ang utak niya sa mga ganyan, eh.”
Paolo also continued that he knows Joey doesn’t mean to hurt others. He acknowledged that every host in Eat Bulaga just wanted to make people happy.
“Of course naman, he doesn’t mean na saktan ‘yung tao, ‘di ba? Dahil lahat naman kami nandito sa Bulaga para magpasaya ng tao. I mean, wala naman sa mga buto namin na para maging masama ‘yung tao, ‘di ba, ganu’n? So, I’m sure and 100% sure na joke lang ‘yun, na it’s just misunderstood by, well, apparently many, kasi marami palang na-offend. But then again, ano lang naman ‘yun, wala namang. . .hindi naman siya pumatay ng tao, ‘di ba?”
Paolo then stated that Eat Bulaga won’t last for 39 years if it aims to offend and criticize people.
“Ang Eat Bulaga naman, ilang years na sa TV, para naman ‘yun pa ang maging intensyon namin na makasakit ng tao. Siyempre, hindi naman tatagal ng 39 years kung ganu’n ang intensyon namin but always, all the time, ang intensyon namin is mapasaya ‘yung mga tao.”
