Why did Bb. Pilipinas candidate Vickie Rushton fail to take home the crown?

Vickie Marie Rushton not bringing home a title was probably the biggest upset of the night during the 56th Binibining Pilipinas Coronation Night. The competition was held at Smart Araneta Coliseum on June 9, 2019.

Being a crowd favorite and the one who bagged almost all of the Special Awards, finalist Rushton was even predicted to be the next title holder.

However, she had a little problem with her Question and Answer portion so she wasn’t able to secure a spot. Gazini Ganados of Cebu won the title of Bb. Pilipinas Universe.

Lamenting with her performance during the Q and A segment of the competition, Vickie admitted that she got distracted by a spectator who suddenly stood up and made face.

“Nasayangan ako. I know kung ano ang sasabihin ko, pero may nag-distract sa akin sa audience. May tumayo at nag-make face,” she admitted during an interview.
It was Kapamilya star Daniel Padilla who asked her opinion regarding mental health. The question goes like this: “Why is mental health as important as physical health?”
This is what the Vickie answered: “Mental health is as important as physical health because of our inner being. Having self-love is important.  As a woman, I can inspire and empower the people to take care of themselves, to take care of their mind as well as their health. They will be as effective.”
According to her, she could’ve answered the question effectively if she was not distracted by someone in the audience since she prepared for it.

She said, “Oo naman po, kasi nag prepare naman po ako kahit paano.”

Because of her answer, she earned criticisms from netizens who found her answer ridiculous. They also believe that she doesn’t deserve to win. Here are some of the comments of netizens:

But despite the hate and bashing of her critics, many were proud of Rushton believing that she gave her best and worked hard to prepare herself for the competition despite not being able to take home a crown.

Even the former Ms. Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, Ruffa Gutierrez, and other celebrities defended her from the bashers and showed their support.

This is not the first time that Rushton joined Binibining Pilipinas. She joined the 2018 Binibining Pilipinas pageant where she competed together with  Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray who also bagged the crown in the said competition. She was crowned as Binibining Pilipinas 2018 first runner-up.

Also, she was crowned as Mutya ng Pilipinas in 2011.

Vickie joined Pinoy Big Brother: All In in 2014. She was the fourth Big Placer.

She has been in a longtime relationship with actor Jason Abalos.
