A journey of 6,437km and eight million steps: Follow British explorer Ash Dykes as he walks the Yangtze River

SOUTHEAST ASIA, OCT 2020 – Armed with 36 kilograms of food in his rucksack and a pair of good walking shoes, British explorer Ash Dykes embarks on an ambitious mission: to be the first person ever to walk the entire length of the Yangtze River.

Documenting his thrilling and treacherous trials, the two-part travel-adventure show Walking the Yangtze with Ash Dykes premieres on 20 and 27 October at 9pm HKT/SIN (8pm BKK/JKT) on National Geographic.

The documentary is a co-production between Singapore-based production and content distribution company Bomanbridge Media and production company Mandarin Film along with China Intercontinental Press (CICC) in China.

Pushed to the limit in this 6,437 kilometre challenge, the extreme athlete travels an estimated eight million steps from the Yangtze’s source in the melt-waters of the Jianggendiru Glacier high up on the Tibetan Plateau, to its delta where it meets the East China Sea in Shanghai. Undeterred by the river’s sheer length, the perilous terrain, extreme weather, and a multitude of dangers, Dykes pushes on to make a new entry in the Guinness Book of Records.

Along the way, he has hundreds of encounters with local people, wildlife and the river itself. Follow along as Dykes deals with a series of trials, including being stopped by local police, followed by a pack of wolves, and interrupted by a blizzard and landslide. Throughout the action-packed adventure, the wonder and thrill of his game-changing and challenging journey keeps Dykes moving forward.

“I look back on the 352-day expedition and see that walking was the least of it; it was the breathtaking nature, vibrant culture and warmth and openness of the people I met that kept me going despite any setbacks,” said Dykes. “Finishing the journey wasn’t just a personal achievement, it was a momentous statement showing that human limits can stretch beyond what we have conceived possible; that all around the world we can still find, meet, and overcome the greatest challenges and experiences.”

Mission Yangtze is Dykes’ third World First record. In 2014, Dykes became the first person recorded to complete a solo and unsupported 78-day expedition across Mongolia. Then, in 2016, he became the first person ever recorded to traverse the length of Madagascar, trekking 2,575km over its eight mountains in 155 days.

Some intoxicatingly fearsome, breathtakingly beautiful and soul-stirringly poignant moments from Walking the Yangtze with Ash Dykes include:
• Experiencing everything from altitudes above 5,000m to temperatures as low as -20°C;
• Traversing the deep canyons, broad plateaux, steep mountains and plunging valleys;
• Facing extreme isolation as his crew are struck with altitude sickness and leave him to face the mission unsupported;
• Persisting in navigation despite poor instructions, partial satellite guidance, and no reliable local information;
• Avoiding animal attacks, poisonous insects and the ferocious Tibetian Mastiffs that protect their owners and territory as if their lives depend on it;
• Continuing onwards through landslides, earthquakes, mudslides, sandstorms, snow blizzards and floods;
• Learning to sing Huangmei opera and performing for the locals in the square;
• Travelling to Shaolin to meditate on craggy mountaintops; and
• Completing the journey in Shanghai, with British consular officials, family, and a crowd of local supporters walking the final kilometer together with Ash Dykes.

The series will air across Southeast Asia in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Channel transmission information for the respective countries, and further details can be found in this press kit here.

Details of the episodes are as follows:

Walking the Yangtze with Ash Dykes – Episode 1
Premieres Tuesday, 20 Oct at 9pm HKT/SIN (8pm BKK/JKT)
Episode 1 introduces Ash as he completes training on the Great Wall before heading south for some language prep and to Yangtze’s source, the beginning of the mission. The source is so high and inaccessible that he loses camera crew and guides, but he eventually makes it. The Tibetan Plateau is a massive challenge. With his Tibetan guides and trusty horse, Ash makes it through near-Arctic conditions and punishing altitude across freezing tributaries and sheer cliffs. He gets to spend time in many nomadic huts but is often exposed and constantly on the lookout for attacks from wild animals. Bears, wolves and Tibetan Mastiffs all roam the land and could put an end to the mission in a flash. Ash’s mission is to beat the onset of winter and get off the plateau and to the first bend of the Yangtze before he gets snowed in.

Locations covered: Qinghai, Yunnan, Sichuan
Seasons: Summer, Autumn, Winter

Walking the Yangtze with Ash Dykes – Episode 2
Premieres Tuesday, 27 Oct at 9pm HKT/SIN (8pm BKK/JKT)
Episode 2 is a new and different challenge. Ash travels through the heart of China, encountering landslides, lengthy detours and dodgy maps, but also incredible hospitality, unique local culture and some of the biggest cities in the world. He learns kung fu in a Taoist monastery, sings traditional opera, learns how to blow pig liver and attends an epic local ethnic minority house-warming party. Later, he samples culinary delights like sand crawlers and also learns about new attempts to save some river species from extinction. Ash then arrives in Shanghai right at the onset of the year’s biggest storm: Typhoon Lekima.

Locations covered: Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu, Wuhan and Shanghai
Seasons: Spring and Summer
