Broadway star Lea Salonga is currently in hot water over her statement about the increasing COVID cases again.

Netizens fired back on Lea after she commented how the country is doing well in terms of COVID responses.

Netizen @mariellehjvp slammed Salonga’s out-of-touch comment saying her comment reeks privilege.

“We were doing so well” sabi ng mga mayayaman kasi nga naman nakakabakasyon na ulit sila, di naman nawalan ng trabaho. The only inconvenience to them was to stay inside for months and now that we are in curfew again, di na raw doing well when the truth is we never did well,” the Netizen tweeted.

Another Netizen, @rainbowtravelr scored Lea for her silence over other pressing issues in the country. He said while Salonga is a great actress and singer–her silence to the killings, oppression, and inequality is appalling.

“Lea Salonga will forever be a great singer & an icon playing oppressed women in stage & film. But she will never be a great feminist & human rights activist. Her silence is defeaning towards real life oppressions, inequality & killings of the past & present regime. Sad but true.”

On Thursday, March 12, the Kapamilya singer took to facebook to share her frustration and dismay over the recent surge of COVID cases again.

Salonga said she felt defeated because the Filipino people were doing so well and asked what happened.

“3,749 cases today. Not gonna lie, when I see numbers going up like this, I feel frustrated and defeated. We were doing so well, what the hell happened? Were our efforts to stay home and stay safe all for nothing? Was the sacrifice of so many millions of people all for nothing? What is happening? Trying to remain patient as well as optimistic, but this is not easy. And I honestly don’t know what else we can do.”

Her comment failed to sit well with Netizen @ceebee_em. The Netizen called out Lea over her ‘we were doing so well’, and commented onthe government’s blunder in addressing the pandemic.

@MsLeaSalonga “We were doing so well” – when? A year after, we’re back to lockdowns and more stupid rules i.e., PDA not allowed. Cases continue to rise – WHO said we haven’t even flattened the first wave yet. Trillions in loans for vaccines & so far only DONATED ones have arrived.

On the other hand, @Stewart___O asked Lea if the Broadway star is dreaming; when she said those words. He inquired further if she might be living in a different country.

“Who told her we were doing so well? Or was it a dream? Maybe she had a dream her life would be so different from this hell we’re living?”

Here are other comments from the Netizens.

@ShuttahYnaMezz – ‘“Doing so well”???? Na sa Pilipinas ka ba gorl @MsLeaSalonga ??? Sabi bawal lumabas ng bahay but that should not stop you to see what’s really happening in the country. Gosh pag maginhawa ang buhay wala na sila sa realidad!”

“Lea, We were NEVER “doing well”. All we did the whole of 2020 was kick the can down the road. Accumulating more cans as we went. Now we have to deal with a junkyard full of tin cans that we can’t kick anymore,” – @_DannyChing

“Doing so well? By what measure @MsLeaSalonga ? Do you now understand what has been lacking since day 1? Do you not hear the people sing?” @lamighangin.

“We were NOT doing so well since day 1. The Philippines has never been COVID19-free even just for a day unlike Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, and New Zealand which were COVID19-free for months,” – @iCristiano_1104.

“Never tayo naging “WELL” miss lea, we’re just getting worst,” – @jaeceelim.

“When did we do so well in as far as containing the virus is concerned? With the present administration, when did we do so well in as far as anything relevant and useful is concerned? Baka nananaginip si Lea Salonga?” – @zenkil_lion.
