Located on Panglao Island, Bohol, the cave has a very fascinating story about its discovery. It was discovered by a farmer who was then trying to do a clearing of his land. He found holes on the ground, which prompted him to take a glimpse. When he dropped stones through the holes, he heard splashes of water.
Curious, he went down to look and found out that the hole leads to a majestic cave. He used an improvised ladder to go down the hole, hence its present name “Hinagdanan”, which is derived from the word ‘hagdan’.

Hinagdanan Cave was once a hideout for Filipino guerrilla forces and locals during the Japanese occupation of the country. An entrance to it is a narrow passage that allows only one passer at a time. The slimy walkway, which is just under a hundred-meter long, feels like a vacuum passage to another dimension, as one would expect to emerge into a different world, once you get to the other side.
Hinagdanan is rich in limestone walls and is marked by exquisite stalactite and stalagmite formations. A lagoon, around 10-12 meters deep, serves as a center attraction under the karst ceiling.
