REVIEW: xiaomi Redmi A1, the “budget stealer”

To say that a smartphone is appropriate for daily use, a few factors must be considered, a smartphone with the potential to steal the show.

The Redmi A1 is an affordable and functional smartphone that allows customers to connect and simply stay up to date on current events and trends. This low-cost smartphone offers excellent specs at an affordable price.

WHAT’S INSIDE THE BOX

When you open the box, you will notice a new type of packaging inside. You will receive the unit, manuals, and warranty papers, as well as a SIM ejector tool, a micro USB cable, and a 10W power brick.

DESIGN AND BUILD

The unit is available in black colorways. It is also available in the colors “Stylish Light Green” and “Stylish Light Blue”. In addition to its textured finish unibody, the back panel of the Redmi A1 feels comfortable in the hand.

It improves the grip when using one hand. A power button and a volume rocker are located on the smartphone’s right side. On the left side, there is a SIM tray slot as well as a separate microSD card slot. The micro USB port, main microphone, and 3.5mm audio jack are all located on the bottom. The loudspeaker is mounted on the roof.

DISPLAY

The Redmi A1 has a 6.52-inch IPS display that is large and bright enough for all of your media consumption needs from a smartphone. The display features a dewdrop notch with slightly thicker bezels that appears dated. It has a 60hz screen refresh rate, a peak brightness of 400 nits, and an HD+ display resolution (1600 x 720). The display is adequate for a low-cost smartphone.

PERFORMANCE

The Redmi A1 is powered by a MediaTek Helio A22 CPU. It is a powerful and efficient chipset designed for low-cost entry-level smartphones. The processor is more than capable of delivering acceptable performance. When it comes to basic tasks like browsing the internet, making video calls, and using navigation, this processor performs admirably. The audio quality is adequate but not exceptional.

It has 32GB of internal capacity that can be expanded via a micro SD card, and it has 2GB of RAM. The limited RAM here makes the smartphone struggle a bit with minor hiccups.

When gaming, I play Call of Duty Mobile. It is set to low graphics by default with medium FPS settings. The game on the smartphone loads slowly at first, but once it does, you can expect fluid gameplay with minor lags. There’s no heating problem at all. The phone can provide a satisfactory gaming experience.

SOFTWARE

The Redmi A1 ships with a stock UI and Android 12 Go Edition out of the box. The OS is completely free of bloatware, and any unwanted programs you find in the app drawer can be removed.

The low-end hardware is complemented by the software, which results in plausible performance. It functions without a hitch and remains stable.

CAMERA

The Redmi A1 has a dual camera setup on the back that includes an 8MP main sensor and a depth sensor. The smartphone features a 5MP selfie camera and a dew drop notch design.

In a well-lit environment, the camera performs admirably. The colors were vibrant, and the camera did a good job of capturing the essential details, but once in the dark, it gradually loses detail, and even color accuracy suffers.

The 5MP front-facing camera takes decent selfies without any added effects, which is a plus. Both the rear and front cameras on the Redmi A1 can record 1080p videos at 30fps.

Overall, they’re merely average cameras. They’ll complete the essential tasks.

BATTERY

The Redmi A1 has a massive 5000 mAh battery, and with heavy use, it will last longer than a day.

Moderate smartphone use included taking photos, watching videos, reading daily content, and sending texts. When the smartphone was not being used for these activities, it lasted approximately two days. With the 10W charger, the smartphone can be fully charged in less than 3 hours.

FINAL VERDICT

Without compromising quality, The Redmi A1 is a reasonable smartphone that allows users to experience top-quality features. It is a respectable smartphone for young people or seniors who are using “any” smartphone for the first time. The Redmi A1 starts at the price of  PHP 4,999.

The product is available in their official retail stores and on their e-commerce site.
