Seems like the Liza Soberano brouhaha is far from over.
After gaining social media and traditional media attention over her recent Vlog which talked about her career rebranding, Soberano remains in the spotlight. This is due to statements from her current talent management agency.
During the 2nd Philippine Creative Industries Summit held on March 7, Careless CEO Jeffrey Oh talked about Soberano’s missed opportunities because of her then-exclusive contract with ABS-CBN.
Oh shared that the former Kapamilya star was supposed to audition for the role of Mary Jane Watson in the Marvel Movie, Spider-Man Homecoming. But because of her contract with the Kapamilya network, she wasn’t able to do that.
The CEO shared, “They reached out to her to audition [for the role of] Mary Jane, one of the most iconic characters. And she was not allowed because she had to do the same thing she was always doing.”
The Careless executive also added that it’s only in the Philippines that artists have been tied to a certain talent management agency for a long-time which was “unheard of anywhere else in the world.”
Oh’s statement promted former manager Ogie Diaz to react, “Isisingit ko lang ‘tong isyung ito ha, kasi ‘pag dinedma ko ‘to, baka ang feeling nila totoong nangyari ito. Ito’y may kinalaman doon sa sinabi ni Mr. Jeffrey Oh, ang CEO ng Careless management ni Liza Soberano, tungkol doon sa nanghihinayang sila kung bakit, sana ay si Liza Soberano ang gumanap na Mary Jane na leading lady ni Spider-Man noong 2016 o 2017.”
He added, “Si Liza Soberano na rin po ang nagsabi na walang imbitasyon na galing sa Marvel. Iyong tweet na ‘yun ay galing sa isang fan na nagpakalat na naniniwala na posible na makapasok si Liza bilang isa sa mga extra o mga may role doon sa Spider-Man kung siya ay sakaling mag-o-audition.”
In a 2016 report by ABS-CBN News’ MJ Felipe, Soberano was quoted denying any invitation from Marvel for her to audition for the role of MJ.
“It’s not really an invitation. I think it was what the fans wanted lang, fans of Marvel. I think one of them is Pinay and parang she tweeted that, parang kung merong magiging Mary Jane Watson, she would want it to be me. All my fans started retweeting it and everything but wala naman po talagang invitation,” said Soberano.
Meanwhile, Star Magic have yet to issue a statement regarding Oh’s latest statement.
