Not everyone is fortunate enough to have their gender identity align with what was assigned at birth. Birth Certificates are the basis for so much that subjects trans individuals to discrimination every single day.
To give the community a way for their name and gender that aligns with their identity to be recognized, Propel Manila partnered with Pride@Tech, and Philippine Financial & Inter-Industry Pride, on Rebirth Certificates.
“This campaign enables trans people to use an NFT as a way to claim their true identity.” shared Pat del Castillo, co-founder of Pride@Tech. “And by minting it in the blockchain, their Rebirth Certificates will be indestructible.”
This use of tech is an answer to the limitations of a government system that still does recognize the concept of gender identity. Rebirth Certificates’ affirmations of lived identity let trans individuals be seen for who they really are.
This acceptance and recognition are something that trans men and women in the Philippines have long deserved. It makes all the difference in the world to be known as you know yourself.
Advocacy Pillar Lead of Philippine Financial & Inter-industry Pride (PFIP) Dawn Mendoza emphasized the everyday importance of gender identity recognition, supported by a Rebirth Certificate. “By integrating it into our hiring systems, trans individuals are now more visible in workplaces because their chosen name and gender identities are acknowledged.”
With a growing network, and the support of the people with lived experiences, and allies, Rebirth Certificates are rewriting possibilities for the trans community. All coming from a push for every person to be recognized for who are, included how everyone else is, and treated with dignity and pride.
