REVIEW: Renny Harlin’s ‘The Bricklayer’ starring Aaron Eckhart

Finnish filmmaker Renny Harlin, celebrated for his past hits like ‘Die Hard 2’ and ‘Cliffhanger,’ is making a comeback with his latest project, ‘The Bricklayer.’

Harlin faced a setback in his career after the 1995 box office failure of ‘Cutthroat Island.’ However, he has continued pursuing his passion for filmmaking.

‘The Bricklayer,’ adapted from Paul Lindsay’s 2010 novel, emerges as an action thriller exploring the realms of secret agents, undercover missions, and global conspiracies. While adhering to the spy movie formula, Harlin injects the film with grittier action, offering a distinctive edge to the genre.

The film’s protagonist, portrayed by veteran actor Aaron Eckhart, embodies Steve Vail, a disenchanted CIA field agent with a love for classical jazz and masonry. Despite his proven effectiveness, Vail finds himself sidelined at the agency until a series of international journalist murders prompts the CIA to seek his expertise.

The narrative unfolds as Vail teams up with Kate Bannon, a young and dedicated CIA agent played by Nina Dobrev, to apprehend Victor Radek, a former covert CIA operative portrayed by Clifton Collins Jr. The storyline takes the audience on a thrilling journey through Greek locales, introducing key characters and unraveling a complex conspiracy.

While the film maintains a brisk pace and sustains viewer interest, it adheres to a fairly conventional spy tale. Some noticeable conveniences and cheesy dialogues diminish its overall impact. The central conflict lacks the necessary tension and stakes, but the film compensates with Harlin’s dynamic direction and Eckhart’s robust lead performance.

‘The Bricklayer’ may have its shortcomings, but it provides moderate entertainment, featuring exhilarating action sequences and keeping audiences engaged.

The film is scheduled for release on January 10th in cinemas nationwide, distributed by VIVA International Pictures.
