In a stunning revelation, the directors of the hit ABS-CBN series ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ revealed the long-kept secret behind the sizzling on-screen chemistry between Maris Racal and Anthony Jennings.
At the finale press conference on April 11th, directors Henry King Quitain and Mae Cruz-Aviar finally shed light on the brilliance that fueled one of the show’s most beloved subplots.
The romance between Irene and Snoop played by Racal and Jennings respectively has been etched as a subplot behind the love team of Belle Mariano and Donny Pangilinan. While the two are the story’s main focus, the characters of Irene and Snoop have their storyline that adds depth and complexity to the series.
“Sa simula pa lang ng conceptualization ng ‘Can’t Buy Me Love,’ mayroon talagang nakaplanta kami for a subplot ng k’wento ng Snoop at ng Irene. It was formulated from the start. Kaya kung mapapansin niyo, sa una pa lang, sino ang unang nakasalo kay Irene noong nahulog siya noong na-kidnap siya? It was Snoop. Because it was intended that way,” Quitain said.
SnoRene became an instant hit with the audience. The chemistry between Racal and Jennings was there.
Cruz-Aviar added that they aimed to make Snoop and Irene an item. Since it was a subplot, they tested whether SnoRene would be a hit. Fortunately, it did, and they now have a new love team to launch.
“I think in every show, aside from the leads na love team, there’s always a goal na mayroon kang mabuo na love team or team-up. In every project, laging mayroon. So I didn’t talk to them about it. I guess sila rin. They saw the potential of the casting and the pair-up.
“I was on leave after the first part ng show. Noong wala ako, ‘yun na pala ang nangyari, they were planning for the launching of their love story. So, I think it’s really naghahanap talaga sila ng parang p’wedeng bagong i-launch din,” she shared.
Meanwhile, Quitain thanked the viewers for supporting the pair.
“So planado siya from the very beginning, and we’re so thankful na kinagat sila ng mga manonood apart from the phenomenon DonBelle, sina Bingo and sina Ling. So we’re thankful for the support they got from the viewers,” he expressed.
As for Racal and Jennings, they are set to join forces on a new project under JP Laxamana.
In the meantime, cherish the final moments of Snoop and Irene in ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ as the series nears its conclusion. The show is part of the Primetime Bida lineup with advance viewing available on Netflix.
