‘As The Moth Flies,’ a short film that has already garnered attention at international film festivals in Belgium, Italy, London, and New York, is set to make its Asian premiere at the Sinag Maynila Independent Film Festival 2024.
The festival will take place from September 4 to 8, marking the film’s much-anticipated debut in the Philippines.
In our interview, ‘As The Moth Flies’ co-writer and director Gayle Oblea revealed an unexpected act of generosity by one of the film’s lead actors, Epy Quizon.
Quizon, who plays a psychiatrist in the film, chose not to accept any payment for his role. Oblea shared that Quizon consistently deferred discussions about his talent fee, eventually refusing to take any compensation even after the film was completed.
Quizon’s decision was driven by his strong belief in the film’s advocacy, which centers on mental health issues—a cause that resonates deeply with him. Oblea explained that the film’s budget was tight, and Quizon’s gesture significantly eased the financial burden on the production, helping ensure that the project, which was developed during the pandemic lockdown, could be completed.
Oblea expressed her surprise and gratitude, noting that Quizon, despite his status as a celebrated actor, director, and producer, remained humble and approachable throughout the filming process. Quizon, known for his acclaimed performances in films such as ‘Markova: Comfort Gay[ and [Bukal,[ kept the atmosphere light on set, even imitating his father, the legendary Dolphy, in one of his famous commercials to put the crew at ease.
Oblea also mentioned that Quizon would arrive on set riding a motorcycle, further highlighting his down-to-earth nature.
‘As The Moth Flies’ features a cast that includes Mina Cruz, theater actor Boo Gabunada, and Pam Arambulo, alongside Quizon. The film’s Asian premiere at Sinag Maynila is eagerly awaited, and the festival’s social media channels will provide updates on the exact screening schedule.
The film also has an international touch, with two of its executive producers being Indians, Rav Singh and Happy Manila, who have supported the project from the beginning.
With its powerful exploration of mental health, ‘As The Moth Flies’ is set to be a highlight of the Sinag Maynila 2024, bringing its important message to a new audience in the Philippines.
