The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has reprimanded a Move It rider who posted on social media about purposely failing to provide exact change to his passengers.
The DTI issued the warning following a viral post by a Move It rider who revealed his strategy of not giving change to passengers.
In his post, the rider admitted he told the passenger that he didn’t have change for amounts of P30 or less, even though he actually did.
He admitted that he used the change he collected for his personal meals.
However, the DTI said this practice is prohibited under Republic Act 10909, or the “No Shortchanging Act of 2016,” which mandates that businesses must provide exact change to customers.
The law also covers ride-hailing apps, even though they were not in existence when the law was enacted, the DTI added.
The DTI said violators may be fined and have their business operating license suspended. After a fourth violation, the business permit will be revoked.
During a television interview, the Move It rider stated that he would not apologize to the netizens who were upset about his actions.
