Kapuso host-actor and Army reservist Matteo Guidicelli is taking his action-star persona to the real world, risking life and limb to headline the GMA Public Affairs documentary ‘Philippine Defenders,’ which airs this Saturday, May 17 at 3:15 p.m. on GMA Network.

A second lieutenant in the Philippine Army Reserve Command, Matteo shares a personal connection with the project. “This has always been my dream — to tell their story,” he said during the show’s media conference. “These are the stories of our real-life heroes. Their sacrifices deserve to be known.”
The documentary showcases Matteo taking part in actual military training and missions, including a death-defying jump featured in the teaser. He also visited areas such as Mindanao, Jolo, Sulu, and the West Philippine Sea, bringing audiences closer to the lives of Filipino soldiers.
But it wasn’t all glory. Matteo admitted he almost quit just three days into the elite ranger training in 2019.
“Talagang araw-araw umiiyak ako for two weeks straight. Gusto ko nang umuwi. Lahat ng makakita ako, naiiyak ako. But I reminded myself, ‘You’re here for a reason.’”
He described the ranger training as something that “rips away your ego”, saying it helped him rediscover humility, discipline, and purpose.
“The Army stripped me of all my walls. Inside, we were all equal,” he added.

Guidicelli emphasized that ‘Philippine Defenders’ is not political. Rather, it is a heartfelt tribute to soldiers — both in uniform and everyday citizens.
“We’re all defenders of the Philippines,” he said. “Even ordinary Filipinos can serve by doing good, living with discipline, and promoting patriotism.”
He credited GMA Public Affairs for greenlighting the project and supporting him in telling these powerful narratives.
“This is not for show. These are real sacrifices. Real tears. Real courage. It’s a privilege to be part of this,” he said.
Beyond military training and action, Matteo also took part in Balikatan ceremonies in Bulacan alongside partners from the U.S., Japan, and Australia, where they helped build new classrooms.
“Balikatan is more than a military exercise. It’s about unity, building communities, and investing in our youth,” he said in a post, adding, “Let’s carry our responsibility as defenders of the Philippines with pride.”

Asked about the risks he takes, Matteo shared how his wife, Pop Royalty Sarah Geronimo, and his family understand that it’s part of who he is.
“They know this is what I love. I want to tell the stories of our Filipino soldiers. I believe risk adds blood to the veins. But God is always in control.”
