Kapuso actor Ruru Madrid is reportedly taking the lead role in GMA Network’s upcoming action-drama series ‘Hari ng Tondo’, sparking conversations online about whether he is replacing fellow actor David Licauco in the much-anticipated project.

Initial buzz around the show linked David Licauco—known for his hit tandem with Barbie Forteza in ‘Maging Sino Ka Man’—as the rumored star of the series. However, latest reports suggest that Ruru, fresh from his role in the fantasy-action series ‘Lolong’, has now reclaimed the part, which sources say was originally intended for him.
Despite the speculation, fans of both actors have reacted calmly. Supporters of David, including fans of the BarDa love team, expressed no outrage, with some even taking it as a positive sign that the actor may soon reunite with Barbie Forteza in another teleserye. Rumors say he might be appearing in ‘Beauty Empire’, the ongoing GMA Network series top-billed by Forteza, Kyline Alcantara, and Ruffa Gutierrez.
Ruru’s casting in ‘Hari ng Tondo’ is largely welcomed by fans and entertainment insiders, many of whom agree that the actor is better suited for a heavy action role.
Still, some viewers noted that it might be too soon for Ruru to headline another primetime series, suggesting the network should give audiences time to miss his presence after ‘Lolong’.
Meanwhile, some observers pointed out that ‘Hari ng Tondo’ might once again pit Ruru against Coco Martin, whose long-running ABS-CBN action drama ‘FPJ’s Batang Quiapo’ has remained a dominant ratings force. The two actors have gone head-to-head in the primetime slot before, but Coco’s shows often outpaced the competition.

There is no official word yet from GMA Network about the casting or production timeline, but reports indicate that taping may begin as early as September, with a potential late 2025 premiere.
‘Hari ng Tondo’ is expected to be inspired by the life of Nicasio “Asiong” Salonga, the infamous gangster known as the “Kingpin of Tondo.” Salonga’s life has been the subject of multiple film adaptations, most notably portrayed by Joseph Estrada, Rudy Fernandez, and George Estregan Jr.
For now, fans of both David Licauco and Ruru Madrid await official confirmation on what’s next for their favorite stars—and whether ‘Hari ng Tondo’ will indeed crown a new primetime king.
