Veteran comedian-host Joey de Leon did not mince words when he made tongue-in-cheek jabs at government contractors currently embroiled in controversy over flood control projects.

During Friday’s episode of ‘Eat Bulaga’ (Sept. 5), Joey slipped in a pointed remark while hosting the segment ‘Gimme Five: Laro Ng Mga Working Pinoy Henyo’. When contestants were asked to guess “sea animals na may letter D,” he quipped “Discaya” — drawing loud laughter from the studio audience and his fellow hosts.
He followed it up with another satirical dig, joking that the prize money for their ‘The Clone: Ka-Voice of the Stars’ segment had to be cut down “dahil sa contractors.”

The remarks came as the Discaya family — particularly siblings Sarah and Curlee Discaya of St. Gerrard Construction — remain under fire for flaunting their wealth online, including a garage filled with more than 40 luxury cars. Their company is one of the contractors flagged for securing billions of pesos in flood-control projects under the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. earlier ordered a lifestyle check on government officials and contractors linked to these projects, while watchdog groups have urged the release of officials’ Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALNs) for full transparency.
Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto, who has been vocal against the ostentatious displays of wealth, stressed in an interview that corruption should never be normalized. “Ostentatious display of wealth is bad regardless of the source… but what we saw online came from the contractors’ side, they themselves posted it. So if they want attention, let’s give it to them,” he said.
