Actress Julia Barretto has joined the conversation on “nepo babies,” a term used to describe children of celebrities or influential figures whose careers are perceived to be aided by family connections.

During the grand launch of her beauty brand Bee Bee on Friday, September 5, in Makati City, Barretto was asked about the label and what it means to her.
“In what sense though? Kasi parang may dalawang meaning na siya, e,” Julia said. Turning more serious, she emphasized her own journey in the industry despite her showbiz lineage.
“Anak lang ako ni Marjorie, but I work hard for what I have. Period. And I suggest you do the same,” she added, without naming anyone in particular.
The 28-year-old actress, daughter of Marjorie Barretto, has been in showbiz for over a decade and is now branching out into business. She officially launched Bee Bee, her debut beauty line with Viva Beauty, which introduced four tinted lip conditioners inspired by her sisters.
“I wanted it to be easy, to be simple, and really want to give credit to my sisters. They really love lip balms. I became knowledgeable because of them. I learned of the shades and tints because of my sisters,” Julia explained.
Bee Bee’s first products—Sweet Nectar, Beekeeper, Honey Drip, and Bee You—feature a nourishing formula with BeeSpoke Tint technology that adapts to the lips’ natural warmth, plus moisturizing ingredients like shea butter and ceramides.
“Bee Bee is my love letter to every Filipina. It’s about owning your beauty and embracing who you are,” she said.
Amid her hectic schedule balancing acting and entrepreneurship, Julia admitted that sleep has become her ultimate luxury. “Tulog talaga. Thankfully the past months I’ve been getting 7–8 hours of sleep. I really make it a point,” she shared.
The “nepo baby” debate has recently intensified in the Philippines, extending beyond showbiz to children of political figures and contractors tied to alleged corruption scandals. But for Julia, the label is best answered by proof of hard work. (with reports from Lau Balocos)
