The Cagayan State University (CSU), through its ElectroMobility Research and Development Center (EMRDC), sets the spotlight on sustainable mobility with its C-Trike or the Converted Electric Tricycle, a fully electric, zero-emission vehicle designed to transform local transport systems in the region.

Developed with strong support from the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technoloy Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), DOST Region 2, and the University of the Philippines Diliman, the C-Trike embodies the country’s move towards cleaner, smarter, and more energy-efficient transportation.

With a total project funding of Php 79.4 million, the C-Trike forms part of the DOST’s Smart and Sustainable Communities Program (SSCP), a national initiative geared toward advancing eco-friendly mobility solutions and reducing reliance on traditional, fuel-powered vehicles.

Designed as a green alternative to gasoline-run tricycles, the C-Trike offers impressive performance, traveling up to 80 kilometers on a single charge, making it an ideal option for daily urban routes. Its potential for wide-scale adoption is already gaining traction as dialogues with the Federation of Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (FETODA) have begun, with stakeholders anticipating the enactment of a local ordinance to regulate the use of converted electric tricycles.

To further accelerate commercialization and community deployment, CSU has signed Technology Licensing Agreements with ACT Machineries and Metal Craft Corporation and Suki Trading Corporation, opening opportunities for mass production and rollout to other localities seeking sustainable transport alternatives.

This initiative not only underscores CSU’s commitment to future-ready innovations but also elevates the university as a leading catalyst in advancing science-driven, environmentally responsible solutions. CSU is showing that it is not merely teaching change but actively shaping it.

The C-Trike is one of the many initiatives, projects, and programs featured in this year’s 2025 NSTW celebration. Aside from this, the week-long event will also showcase activities, forums, and interactive exhibits anchored on the sub-theme: Building Smart and Sustainable Communities, which aims to showcase several R&D based and scientific services that would offer long-term solutions to different communities’ pressing challenges and existing limitations.

The 2025 NSTW is open to the public and will run from November 18 to 21, 2025 in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. For the complete list of activities and schedule, follow the NSTW Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/nstwdost or visit the NSTW website at http://nstw.dost.gov.ph.
