The Filipino street music scene reached international grounds as The Busking Community PH (TBCPH) held its first-ever overseas busking showcase in Hong Kong through “Mula Sa Kalsada, Para Sa Kalsada ng Hong Kong.”
The event featured Fisheads, Ciara Silva, Ren Bugash, and Martin Riggs, who brought the raw, heartfelt sound of Filipino street performance to the lively streets of Hong Kong. Their sets captured the spirit of music made for the people and by the people—an exchange of culture, energy, and community.
Apart from their street performances, the group also performed for the Filipino overseas community in Hong Kong, offering a familiar sound of home to many OFWs. What began as a casual stop turned into one of the most emotional moments of the trip.
According to Martin Riggs, co-founder of The Busking Community PH, that encounter became deeply personal.
“Napunit puso ko sa lahat ng nakita kong Pilipino na nakatambay sa underpass,” Riggs recalled. “May mga dekada nang ‘di makauwi sa pamilya. May nakausap ako — first time niya uuwi sa March 2026, graduation ng anak niya.”
“Ang ending, lahat ng kinanta ko para sa mga OFW. Kaya nagkaroon ng gano’n karaming crowd, at nagkaroon din ng purpose na magka-ron ng TBCHK.”
The idea of performing overseas stemmed from a long-standing friendship with Fisheads, a Hong Kong duo who previously flew to Manila to busk through TBCPH.
“Fisheads registered as a TBCPH busker and played in Manila last year,” Riggs shared. “We already talked about the possibility of us busking in Hong Kong with them — and now it finally happened.”
He described the trip as both a cultural exchange and a milestone for the Filipino busking community.
“Masaya, nakaka-proud — pero higit doon, may natututunan kami sa isa’t isa,” he said. “Sa Manila, marami sa amin secured ang permits. Dito sa Hong Kong, guerilla-style pa rin. Iba, pero parehong may puso.”
Riggs also shared that the collaboration sparked a new, bigger vision.
“Alexis of Fisheads reached out to me about forming a busking community in Hong Kong, inspired by what they experienced in the Philippines. I guess that’s the start of what we can potentially call TBCHK — The Busking Community Hong Kong.”
With Hong Kong as its first international stop, The Busking Community PH continued to fulfill its mission — to bring music from the streets, for the streets — wherever they may be.
