Actor Paolo Gumabao headlined the media conference for the upcoming film ‘Spring in Prague’ on January 12, 2026, at Valle Verde Country Club, where cast members, filmmakers, and members of the press gathered to discuss the film’s story and creative journey.

Produced by Borracho Film Production and directed by Lester Dimaranan, the event brought together Gumabao alongside co-stars Sara Sandeva, Marco Gomez, Elena Koziova, Ynah Zimmerman, Keahnna Reyes, Tori Topacio, and Esel Ponce, with producer Atty. Ferdie Topacio is also in attendance.
The media conference centered on Spring in Prague, with Gumabao sharing insights into his role and the emotional weight of the film. He spoke about the project’s themes and the collaborative experience of working with an international cast, describing the film as one that aims to resonate with audiences through its storytelling and performances.
However, the conversation soon moved beyond the film itself when Topacio addressed a broader issue confronting the local film industry—the future of the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF). He proposed that the festival be placed under the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) rather than the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), arguing that the MMFF should be governed by a body with a clear mandate for film development and artistic standards.

Topacio also questioned the MMFF 2025 Best Actor award, which was won by Vice Ganda over Piolo Pascual, saying the outcome raised serious concerns among filmmakers. He criticized the MMDA’s continued involvement in organizing the annual festival, insisting that film evaluation and awards selection fall outside the agency’s scope.
“Yung Manila Finest, in-ignore nila,” Topacio said, referring to what he believes were performances and films that deserved greater recognition.
Despite the heated remarks, the event underscored the dual role of Spring in Prague—not only as an upcoming cinematic release but also as a catalyst for wider conversations about artistic merit, festival governance, and the direction of Philippine cinema.
As anticipation builds for the film, the media conference ensures that Spring in Prague is already making waves, both on and off the screen. (with reports from Loyd Pino)
