Stars of the Kapamilya series The Broken Marriage Vow (TBMV) Zanjoe Marudo and Jodi Sta. Maria on Monday, June 6 admitted that they questioned themselves for leading the adaptation of the popular British show.
In the press conference for TBMV’s last three weeks, Marudo felt not only pressure but also fear, provided that the Filipino adaptation is the eighth version of Doctor Foster.
“Noong unang-una, nang malaman ko na gagawin ko ang character ni David siyempre, aaminin ko na may takot ako, malaki ang pressure na p’wede kong maramdaman bago gawin ang show,” he confessed.
His co-star Sta. Maria even questioned the decision of the Kapamilya Network to make her top-bill the series.
“No’ng in-offer ‘yung project, sa totoo lang, nagulat ako. At una kong tinanong sa manager ko, ‘Ha?! Bakit ako?'” wondered the 39-year-old actress.
She continued, “Tapos ngayon, ipe-play ko ‘yung role ng doktora. So parang hindi ko alam kung paano ko sisimulan. Na-pressure ba ako? Oo sobra. Kasi ilan na rin namang bansa ang gumawa ng kanya-kanyang adaptation.”
The actress was indeed pressured, knowing that it would be a challenge for them to add Filipino flavor to the series without compromising the story.
“Pero ‘yung naging challenge talaga is paano siya mapapa-iba doon sa mga nauna. Kasi tulad nga nang sinabi ko, hindi naman tayo kumukopya though siyempre, sumusunod tayo sa arko ng k’wento na mayroon na sila ‘di ba? Pero siyempre paano ba natin ito ikukwento bilang Pilipino, bilang tayo.”
Her co-star also pointed out that he learned to trust himself as ABS-CBN did to him.
“Pero well, siguro nandoon na ako sa punto na handa na ako kahit ano pang ibigay sa akin na challenge lalo na sa pagdating sa pag-arte, paggawa ng project.
“To think na sila ang unang nagtiwala, at nag-isip na ako ang gumanap bilang David, sino ba naman ako para i-doubt pa ang sarili ko kung mismong ang kumpanya na ‘yung naniniwala na kaya kong gawin ang character ni David.”
Both stars also did not shy from asking for help from their directors to portray their characters to their best abilities.
Marudo even discovered that TBMV might prove that Filipinos could compete internationally in terms of quality series.
“Marami siyang binuksan na opportunities hindi lang sa amin, hindi lang sa ABS, kundi sa industriya natin na kaya pala nating gumawa, kaya nating tumapat sa mga ibang productions sa ibang bansa.”
TBMV has entered its last three weeks, where David Ilustre (Marudo) tries to navigate his feelings for Dr. Jill (Sta. Maria) and Lexi (Sue Ramirez).
