GMA Network, to bring back “T.G.I.S.?”

GMA Network is said to bring back the 90’s hit teen-oriented-show “T.G.I.S.”

T.G.I.S. (Thank God It’s Sabado) is a Filipino youth-oriented drama series aired on GMA Network from August 12, 1995 to November 27, 1999. The series aired every Saturday. It was produced by GMA Network, and VIVA Television. The title is derived from the popular expression “TGIF.”

“T.G.I.S.,” as they say, is the juvenile TV series that started it all: a group of something-teens belonging to above-average class families facing the challenges of growing up. The original group composed of Red Sternberg, Angelu De Leon, Bobby Andrews, etc. was the most popular. The TV show reached the summit during their stay, and the plot and storyline fell apart after their departure. “T.G.I.S.” was so popular, the enemy channel came up with their own teen show, but mostly the plot line and characterizations of that show were copied from this one. However, as time went along, cast members passed and so did the show’s popularity. Eventually the “T.G.I.S.” was replaced by another teen show, but it never came close to the phenomenon that is “T.G.I.S.”

The “T.G.I.S.” storyline started from solving simple teenage problems to complex adolescent situations such as teenage pregnancy, premarital sex, etc. The show also usually dealt with teenage secrecy, and the misfortune comes when the kids on the show try to solve complex problems by themselves without adult supervision. Thank the heavens for the censorship board and they came up with the ‘Parental Guidance’ logo on the screen. Saturday afternoons became the major teen TV spot for a couple of years, and we have “T.G.I.S.” to thank for that.

The new series will be topbilled by Derrick Monasterio and new batch of Kapuso Tweenstars. Still directed by Mark Reyes (original director), there are still ongoing auditions for this series.

TGIS Audition: If you are 14-18 years old with pleasing personality, go to GMA Network bldg. on September 13 (Thursday), 10AM-5PM look for Diego Llorico
