Jireh Lim calls for stricter laws after motorcycle taxi rider’s killing

OPM singer-songwriter Jireh Lim has joined the public outcry following the killing of a motorcycle taxi rider who was allegedly stabbed and robbed by his own passenger.

The incident, captured on CCTV, showed the suspect suddenly attacking the rider from behind while the victim was still seated on his motorcycle. Despite attempting to flee and return to his vehicle, the rider succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital.

Authorities later revealed that the victim was a solo parent who left behind a three-year-old child with autism. The child’s mother had also passed away years earlier.

Reacting to the tragedy, Jireh took to Facebook to share photos of the suspect’s arrest while raising concerns about crime and the country’s justice system.

According to the singer, many offenders no longer seem afraid of the consequences of committing crimes, unlike in countries where penalties are perceived to be more stringent.

“What if mas mabigat ang parusa at mas mahigpit ang implementation ng batas?”

He suggested increasing penalties and strengthening law enforcement as a possible deterrent.

“Halimbawa, 10x na mas mataas ang pyansa at mas mahahabang sentensya para sa mga mabibigat o magaang na krimen. Baka hindi lang dalawang beses mag-isip ang gagawa ng krimen—baka sampu o dalawampung beses pa.”

Based on the police investigation, the suspect allegedly attempted another robbery in Malabon just hours after the fatal stabbing. He was eventually apprehended after residents chased and cornered him.

Investigators also linked the suspect to an earlier motorcycle theft involving another rider days before the killing.

The suspect now faces charges for alleged violations of the New Anti-Carnapping Act of 2016, as well as robbery and homicide.

Jireh’s post has since generated discussions online, with many netizens echoing his call for stronger law enforcement while others stressed the need for swift and effective implementation of existing laws to better protect both workers and the public.
