ABS-CBN stages 8th Pinoy Media Congress, students to learn inner workings of media from experts

Communication students from all over the nation will get a glimpse of the inner workings of media as the industry’s finest practitioners gather once again for this year’s “Pinoy Media Congress (PMC),” to be held on January 31 at the ABS-CBN Studio 10 in Quezon City and on February 1 and 2 at the Trinity Theatre, Trinity University of Asia.

ABS-CBN chairman Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III and ABS-CBN president and CEO Charo Santos-Concio will lead the resource speakers in the two-day event, which will also feature the launch of Lopez’s book, “In the Service of Filipinos Worldwide: Speeches and Stories by Eugenio Lopez III.”

With the theme “Media: Beyond Information and Education,” this year’s PMC will hold sessions on TV broadcasting and production, lectures on media trends and issues, and a dialogue with the leaders of ABS-CBN, the country’s television pioneer and largest multimedia conglomerate.

All set to impart their knowledge and experiences on these topics are ABS-CBN head of Broadcast Cory Vidanes, head of News and Current Affairs Ging Reyes, head of Corporate Marketing Cookie Bartolome, head of Programming Operations and On-air Management Jillmer Dy, head of Creative Communications Management Robert Labayen, head of Corporate Communications Bong Osorio, head of Customer Business Development Vivian Tin, head of ABS-CBN Regional Network Group Jerry Bennett; experts Martin Hadlow, Jason Cruz, and Atty. Harry Roque; and veteran journalists Alvin Elchico, Jorge Cariño, Carmina Reyes, Lester Chavez, and Paul Henson.

Osorio said the PMC has grown to be a much-awaited event for communication and journalism students since its inception in 2005, drawing around 1,000 students from all over the country each year.

“From the start, we at ABS-CBN could see the promise of the Pinoy Media Congress in enriching the next generation of mass communicators. So from a simple program featuring eye-opening talks and discussions, it now offers more interaction and engagement with a video-making contest, film showing, studio tour, and even performances by ABS-CBN artists,” he shared.

The Philippine Association of Communication Educators (PACE), which organizes the yearly event with ABS-CBN, expressed its gratitude for the continued support of the network to PMC.

“We are very thankful for the commitment of ABS-CBN to this project. As the industry leader, ABS-CBN has all the tools to equip our students with technical know-how that would prepare them for their future careers. We look forward to more years of partnership,” said PACE President, Prof. Gwenetha Pusta.

This year, delegates will learn about the history of Philippine television in Bartolome’s presentation on the 60 years of the Kapamilya network. Following her is Dy, who will discuss the process of production.

Labayen, the mind behind the network’s famous Christmas Station IDs, will then tackle the process of creating advocacy plugs to connect with television viewers.

Osorio, on the other hand, will orient the students on crisis communication, while Tin will talk about the importance of understanding the audience.

To uncover the nitty-gritty of broadcasting practice, there will also be a session with “TV Patrol Weekend” anchor Elchico. Seasoned journalists Jorge Cariño, Carmina Reyes, Lester Chavez, Paul Henson, and Karen Davila, on the other hand, will reveal the the ten things to know about field reporting, current affairs, making a documentary, news scriptwriting, and anchoring, respectively.

For issues beyond television, the PMC will have Martin Hadlow, secretary-general of the Asian Media Information and Communication Center (AMICC), to discuss the changing landscape of media in the region. Meanwhile, MRM Worldwide Manila’s community manager Jason Cruz will talk about the trends and future of social media. MRM is the digital arm of McCann Worldgroup Manila.

Hot topics such as tourism and media-related legislation will also be tackled by Bennett with a case study on the Choose Philippines campaign, while renowned lawyer Atty. Roque will dissect the Anti-Cybercrime Law and the Freedom of Information Bill.

The Pinoy Media Congress has been awarded by prestigious award-giving bodies including the Philippine Quill Awards of the International Association of Business Communicators Philippines in 2007 and the Anvil Awards of the Public Relations Society of the Philippines in 2008.
