“The Ghost Bride” earns more than P14.3 million on first day

The Ghost Bride is a much-awaited Filipino horror film starring Kim Chiu, Alice Dixon and Matteo Guidicelli. The film is directed by Chito S. Roño. As of November 1, 2017, the movie will be showing in more than 180 theaters nationwide. Roño handpicked Chiu for this role saying it has to be someone a part of the Chinese community because it involves a Chinese family.

The film shows the Chinese tradition of ghost marriage where one or both parties are deceased. This is her third movie with director Roño and her third horror film so far. The movie just earned more than P14.3 million on the first day of showing.

Chiu’s character, Mayen, is struggling to earn money for her family until Alice Dixon’s character shows up and offers her a business proposal. The business proposal includes her getting married to a deceased man. She accepts it until something or someone haunts her and the people around her.

It is believed that in some parts of China, it is bad luck for a man to die unmarried. This belief leads to families finding brides for deceased bachelors to have a wedding post-mortem. Although the origin of the tradition is unknown, it is still being done by many Chinese families.

For the past years, Chiu has been involved in movies where she is with a love team. She stated that she is very happy for the opportunity to star on her own film. Chiu also confirmed that her family had a ghost bride. The cousin of her grandmother was married to a deceased man which made her known of the tradition.

Chiu exclaimed that the Philippine Queen of Horror, Kris Aquino, is very supportive of her and that Aquino confirmed that she is actually going to watch. Chiu would always receive questions from Aquino, how did the fiming go and how was Direk Chito. In 2015, Aquino, Chiu and Roño worked together for the dramatic film, Etiquette for Mistresses.

Xian Lim, Chiu’s rumored boyfriend, also shared his support for the 27-year-old actress. He also shared a photo of them together with the caption, “to this delicate petunia. congratulations @chinitaprincess! I know how hard you’ve worked and waited for this film. You are talented and one of a kind. Congratulations in advance! I want to hug you right now because I’m so happy for all your success pero busy ka pa. always remember dami nagmamahal sayo. Ghost Bride now showing!”

The Ghost Bride also stars Christian Bables, Ina Raymundo, Robert Seña, Cacai Bautista, Mon Confiado, Beverly Salviejo, Jerome Ponce, Victor Silayan, Bea Saw, Isay Alvarez, Nanding Josef and Elizabeth Chua. This film is Chiu’s thirteenth film under Star Cinema.
