It took The Broken Marriage Vow numerous broken relationships and shattered hearts to finally arrive at its tumultuous yet liberating finale. The biggest loser in the war ex-married couple, Jill (Jodi Sta. Maria) and David (Zanjoe Marudo) waged–was ultimately their son, Gio (Zaijian Jaranilla).
Leading to what the show advertised as a “heart-shattering” finale was David’s suicidal attempt after kidnapping Gio. Jill managed to trace the clues leading to her former husband, who was already ready to dive to his death on a cliff, while Gio was standing frozen as his horrified sole witness. Asked by her son to avert his father’s plan, Jill pleaded with David to stop, which he did, but only after she promised she would aid him in going through a painless death.
One can’t say, that, unlike its original counterpart, The Broken Marriage Vow is not a slow simmer. It had several peak points, where heat and emotional intensities are far greater than the events in the finale. The ripple effect seemingly played out until the last episode, although the repetitive emotional tension almost caused a bore. That said, it is hard to deny how this show managed to defy expectations, especially for a local adaptation of a global hit.
Attention to detail, pacing, and stellar performances take center stage in this exquisite adaptation, which Viu Philippines recently declared record-breaking. Excellent choices got employed to give it its distinctive Filipino flavor, even though it kept its source material’s spine and core. That choice manifested even in the final episode, which saw the rebuilding of Dr. Jill’s family, albeit in the absence of her former husband. Of course, one can’t help but marvel at Sta. Maria’s quiet but heartbreaking scene, when she found out Gio ran away.
The last episode reminded the viewers of the picturesque city of Baguio and why its scenic beauty as a backdrop for a story full of heartaches, that was not solely shared by David and Jill, but also by Lexy (Sue Ramirez), by Gio, and those who are dear to them. It is a stark reminder that there is always something more about anything than meets the eye.
Jill finally realized that in the end, when she found that her victory over David was at the expense of losing her son. It is also only through losing Gio that she finally realized the essence of being a mother.
Undoubtedly ABS-CBN’s most memorable post-shutdown and ‘pandemic era’ series, so far, The Broken Marriage Vow set a new standard for local drama.
It is not only true for its high-octane emotional finale, whose thrilling twists and heart-shattering turns are simply mind-blowing, but for the whole series itself, whose unfamiliar brilliance and caliber were thoroughly maintained by its cast, directors, and showrunners, until the end.
