On July 30, Real Florido highlighted his intention of showing the state of the LGBTQIA+ community in the Philippines through his Boys Love series.
At the media conference for Kumusta Bro: The Series, Florido said that he aimed to help the country understand the challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community through his series.
“Ako po ‘yung tipo ng story teller, or director– series director, showrunner na gagawa po ako ng material na pinaniniwalaan ko at hindi po ako gagawa nito dahil uso or sasakay tayo sa uso no.
“Sa akin po kasi, naghahanap ako ng magandang paraan kung saan mas mapapaintindi natin sa mga manonood kung ano po ‘yung kalagayan ng bansa natin bilang pagkilala sa mga miyembro ng LGBTQ.”
He then cited the potential of the BL genre in conveying messages regarding the LGBTQIA+ community.
“Ang ganda po kasing Boys Love genre, genre kasi siya ng romance originally. Dahil ang dali niyang sakyan, ang dali niyang intindihin, parang hindi kasi siya katulad ng mga hardcore na LGBTQ na alam mo na ginawa para LGBTQ community mostly.
“Ito kasing Boys Love, nagiging popular culture kasi siya in many ways. Actually, sa Asia malakas siya. Also, ang Europe, malakas din sila mag-consume ng BL na Asian. Kaya nga recently gumawa din ang UK di ba? Mayroon silang BL series na — yes Heartstopper. I think it’s because they understood kung gaano kalaki ‘yung potential ng ganitong klaseng kwento.”
He explained that the BL genre helps humanize the LGBTQIA+ experience to the general public.
“Ito kasing BL Genre, hinu-humanize niya ang pagiging miyembro ng LGBTQ. Normalize. Ibig sabihin, normal na nakikita mong nai-in love ang isang beautiful boy sa isang kapwa beautiful boy. Binibigyan mo ng isang pantasya ang isang bata, ang isang teenager, or isang hopeless romantic, na kahit siya ay magkakaroon ng chance knowing someone na mahahalin siya.”
He also discussed the issues about the representation of the LGBTQIA+ community in mainstream media.
“So noong nakita ‘yung opportunity na ‘yun, sabi ko ito siguro ‘yung right time para masabi ko ‘yung gusto kong sabihin about the LGTBQ community where I am a part of, I’m a part of the LGBTQ community. Sa Pilipinas kasi– wag na nating patamisin pa, totoong ginagawa lang katatawanan karaniwan ang mga miyembro ng LGBTQ community.
“Napaka-defined lang ng LGBTQ sa mga media content na ginagawa natin. Sidekick, katatawan, taga-parlor, hindi naman ‘yan ang mukha ng LGBTQ di ba? Ito, may ganitong mukha. So kung mayroon isang bata na kagaya niya–actually, pinagmulan ko ‘yan eh. Noong bata ako nako-confuse ako, hindi ko alam kung saan ba ako.
“Kasi parang pag sinabing bakla or bading, kailangan nasa parlor, pero hindi ko nakikita ‘yung sarili ko sa parlor. Hindi ko nakikita ‘yung sarili ko na nagme-make up.”
He also stressed that his goal in making the series was to give a representation of the LGBTQIA+ community through media for the younger generation.
“So gusto kong gawan ng statement ‘yun kasi I’m sure napakaraming bata na kagaya ko noon, napakaraming bata ngayon na kailangan nila malaman nila ‘yung position nila sa society.
“Na they deserve to be respected, they deserve to be loved as a human being. So ‘yun po ‘yung intention ko kung bakit ako gumawa ng ganitong klaseng BL.”
He emphasized their series’ theme of acceptance.
“At napakalakas po nung tema ng aming series. That the theme of the series is about acceptance. Acceptance meaning, tanggap mo ba ang sarili mo bilang ikaw kung ano ka, tanggap ka ba ng pamilya mo, tanggap ka ba ng society, tanggap ka ba ng kabarkada mo, tanggap ka ba ng mundo.”
