Drag performer Pura Luka Vega stands resolute in their belief that drag is an art form and not a crime, emphasizing the importance of faith and resilience in the face of adversity.
Pura shared their sentiments during a recent interview at the show’s viewing party. Despite facing their second arrest, Pura expressed gratitude for the support received and maintained confidence in their innocence.
The arrest stemmed from a warrant issued by a Quezon City court related to alleged violations linked to Pura’s viral ‘Ama Namin’ video. This legal ordeal adds to the challenges they faced in October 2023. However, Pura remains steadfast in their conviction that drag serves as a legitimate form of self-expression and art.
“Apart from my family and my friends, hindi naman nag-waver ang paniniwala ko sa Divine Being. It’s weird but I think God has always been on our side, the side of the oppressed and the side of the LGBTQIA+ community and that’s what matters. Thank you, Lord,” they said.
Reflecting on the broader societal implications of their legal battles, Pura sees it as a test of acceptance for the LGBTQIA+ community. They underscored the ongoing struggle for equal rights and recognition, emphasizing the need for continued advocacy and visibility.
“I didn’t know there was a warrant. But we followed naman, I have no intention of running from the police anyway. So okay, but I stand firm in my belief that I did nothing wrong. It’s purely an expression of my queerness and my faith. There’s nothing wrong with it,” they said.
Despite the obstacles, Pura remains optimistic and encourages others to embrace their true selves. Their unwavering spirit serves as a reminder of the resilience within the LGBTQIA+ community amidst adversity.
As they navigate through legal proceedings, Pura’s determination to continue advocating for LGBTQIA+ rights and pursuing their artistic endeavors remains unwavering.
