This July, VMX brings gritty, unfiltered stories of women reclaiming power through its newest releases: ‘Maalikaya’ and ‘Tusok Tusok.’
Behind bars, a woman tastes freedom for the first time. From director Roman Perez Jr. comes ‘Maalikaya,’ a fearless tale of awakening, survival, and self-liberation of a woman behind prison walls. Stream it now on VMX.
‘Maalikaya’ follows the story of Kara (Aliya Raymundo), a 19-year-old woman forced into marriage by her business-driven family. But on her honeymoon, an accident nearly kills her husband—an incident that led to her incarceration in a women’s penal colony.
Inside, Kara is welcomed by a group of inmates who are close to her age. Among them is Lila (Jenn Rosa), a fellow prisoner who becomes her confidante, and eventually, her lover. As Kara experiences affection and freedom for the first time, she slowly breaks away from the life of control she once knew.
But beyond the unexpected sense of community lies a dangerous truth. Kara discovers an underground operation inside the prison where some inmates sell their bodies for survival. Some are even taken out of the prison to meet high-paying clients.
As Kara explores her newfound sexuality, she becomes entangled into this system, encouraged by the very friends who made her prison days bearable. But just as she begins to embrace this new version of herself, a familiar face from her past reappears—one that threatens to jeopardize the sense of freedom she’s only starting to claim.
In a world of desire and danger, how far will Kara go to survive? Experience the heat, the thrill, and the secrets—stream ‘Maalikaya’ exclusively on VMX.
From prison walls to the streets, ‘Tusok Tusok’ tells another tale of survival. ‘Tusok Tusok’ centers on Barbie (Sahara Bernales), a street food vendor whose days are spent skewering pork and grilling barbeque to make ends meet. She shares a cramped home with her younger sister Tanya (Queenie de Mesa) and her possessive, drug-addicted live-in partner Bogart (JC Tan). As the family’s sole provider, Barbie shoulders the weight of survival—unaware that her sister has become the object of the twisted desire of the very man they live with.
Despite Barbie’s exhaustion from endless days of work, her life is further controlled by Bogart’s aggression and insatiable lust. Just beyond their stall, their neighborhood streets tell a darker story, where selling sex is a means to get through the day, and exploitation is part of the daily grind.
But when Bogart crosses an unforgivable line, something in Barbie breaks—and what follows is an act of reckoning that changes everything.
How far will one go to protect what little she has left? Witness what justice and liberation look like in a world that keeps women silenced and abused—until they choose to fight back.
Directed by Ronald Espinosa Batallones, ‘Tusok Tusok’ is available to stream beginning July 29.
