PETA Theater Center pulses with new energy as Esteban Mara officially takes on the lead role of Leo in the stage adaptation of the Cinemalaya classic, #EndoOnStage. Bringing a raw, aching soul to the character, Mara anchors a production that serves as a powerful mirror to the life of the modern Filipino worker.
The play directed by Melvin Lee and adapted by Liza Magtoto reimagines the “endo” (end of contract) cycle for a contemporary audience. In this version, Leo is a survivor of the gig economy, navigating the physical and emotional exhaustion of a life lived on a five month countdown. Mara, who shares the role with Royce Cabrera, focuses on grounding his performance in the authentic struggle and resilience of the local workforce.
Mara’s move from his recent screen projects back to his theater roots marks a significant milestone in his career. His interpretation of Leo is being noted for its quiet intensity and physical realism, capturing the constant hustle required to survive in an unstable job market. To prepare for the role, Mara spent time interviewing real life workers, ensuring every movement on stage reflects the reality of those he represents.
“ Living Leo’s journey is enlightening because you get to understand better every decision most Filipinos make that we usually judge.
When the audience are forced to look at his disposition, there’s that hope that somehow in some way people can understand that it all boils down to the system.” Esteban Mara
Presented by Ticket2Me in partnership with PETA Plus, the play follows the delicate relationship between Leo and Tanya (alternately played by Jasmine Curtis Smith and Rissey Reyes Robinson) as they struggle to keep intimacy alive amidst systemic job insecurity.
“I am grateful for the acting workshops CSA has allowed me to take. It is super important that I’ve been able to gain confidence acting on my impulses and ability as an actor stepping into the lead role of ENDO.” Mara added.
