REVIEW: ‘Love, Ngo’ turns crude humor into a surprisingly touching story

It is not often that a Filipino comedy makes audiences laugh out loud from start to finish, but ‘Love, Ngo’ manages to do exactly that.

Directed by Darryl Yap, the film brings back the beloved character Ngongo, first introduced in ‘Ang Babaeng Walang Pakiramdam’. This time, however, the spotlight is entirely on him as viewers get a deeper look into his life, his struggles, and his search for love and self-acceptance.

Let’s get this out of the way: ‘Love, Ngo’ is unapologetically funny, crass, and at times politically incorrect. Its humor will not be for everyone. Some viewers may even find themselves offended by some of the jokes, particularly those involving speech impairments and disabilities. But the film is aware of its brand of comedy and fully commits to it.

Leading the film is Jerald Napoles, who proves once again why he remains one of the country’s most underrated comedic actors. His timing is impeccable, but what elevates his performance is the emotional depth he brings to Ngongo. Beneath the jokes and funny mannerisms is a character struggling with insecurities, rejection, and the desire to be loved.

Several scenes showcase Napoles’ dramatic abilities, particularly his emotional moments with Gina Alajar, who plays his loving and protective mother. Their scenes provide some of the film’s most heartfelt moments and earned strong reactions from the audience.

However, the film’s biggest surprise comes from social media personality Malupiton.

For someone making his feature film debut, Malupiton displays remarkable confidence and natural comedic instincts. His punchlines consistently land, and his screen presence is undeniable. Every time he appears onscreen, he commands attention and generates some of the movie’s biggest laughs.

What makes his performance even more impressive is how effortless it feels. He never looks like a first-time actor. Instead, he blends seamlessly with the seasoned cast and often steals scenes from more experienced performers.

Fans of Malupiton’s viral comedy skits will especially appreciate ‘Love, Ngo’. The film perfectly captures the same brand of humor that made him a social media sensation—quick-witted punchlines, unfiltered observations, and absurdly funny reactions delivered with impeccable timing. Those already familiar with his content will feel right at home, as many of the comedic beats that worked in his online videos translate effectively to the big screen. Rather than toning down his personality, the film allows Malupiton to fully embrace the humor that his followers have come to love.

The chemistry between Ngongo and his group of friends, played by Malupiton, Jack Argota, Jobelyn Manuel, and Tata Daclan, is another strength of the movie. Their confrontation scenes and comedic exchanges feel natural and relatable, helping balance the film’s more dramatic moments.

Beyond the humor, ‘Love, Ngo’ carries a meaningful message about self-worth and acceptance. Ngongo spends much of his life believing that people only see his disability and mock him for it. In pursuing his first love Scarlet (Louise delos Reyes), he slowly loses sight of the people who have always accepted and loved him unconditionally.

The film’s lesson is simple but effective: before seeking validation from others, one must first learn to accept and love oneself.

While Darryl Yap’s signature humor remains intact, ‘Love, Ngo’ surprisingly contains more heart than expected. Beneath the crude jokes and outrageous punchlines is a story about friendship, family, insecurity, and personal growth.

The movie may not appeal to all audiences because of its edgy comedy style, but those willing to embrace its humor will find a surprisingly touching film underneath.

In the end, ‘Love, Ngo’ succeeds because it does more than make audiences laugh. It reminds viewers that imperfections do not define a person’s worth and that genuine love often comes from the people who have been there all along.

Funny, heartfelt, and unexpectedly moving, ‘Love, Ngo’ is one of the most entertaining local comedies of the year.
