Micronutrient Deficiency Among Mothers Puts Child Development at Risk

Micronutrient deficiency or “hidden hunger” remains a public health concern among Filipino women. Many lack essential nutrients for themselves and their children’s healthy development.

The urgency heightens during pregnancy when nutritional demands increase, placing both mother and child at risk. According to the Food and Research Institute (FNRI 2013), 90% of pregnant women are calcium deficient, 70% lack enough protein, 38% are folate deficient, and 30% have inadequate iron intake. This scale of deficiency signals a widespread maternal nutrition challenge with long-term implications.

From Maternal Health to Lifelong Child Outcomes

Essential nutrients like folate, calcium, iron, iodine, and Vitamin A are critical for fetal brain development and overall growth. When these needs are unmet, the consequences can persist throughout a child’s life.

The Philippines faces a growing risk to child development at a population level. Poor maternal nutrition is linked to impaired cognitive development, weaker immunity, reduced learning capacity, and even lower future productivity—impacting both individuals and society.

The First 1,000 Days: A Critical Window That Cannot Be Repeated

The First 1,000 Days covers conception to two years old, recognized as the most critical window for development. A midwife highlighted a crucial reality during a recent Anmum Event discussion: once the window has passed, the opportunity to fully influence a child’s development through maternal nutrition is irreversible.

Addressing the Gap: A Collective Responsibility

Bridging the gap requires a collective action. Increasing awareness and improving access to proper nutrition are critical steps toward protecting the next generation. Roshan De Silva, President of Lactalis-Mainland Dairy, emphasized that Anmum’s Strong from the Start initiative supports maternal nutrition to give children the best start in life.

“We are aligned with the nation’s aspiration to help children have the best start,” De Silva shared. “Through Strong from the Start, we aim to educate about the importance of the First 1,000 days. We empower mothers and support them to make informed decisions.”

A Stronger Start for a Stronger Nation

A child who can’t reach their full potential becomes a missed opportunity for the nation’s future growth and productivity. Educated mothers contribute to building a generation that is better equipped to thrive as proper maternal nutrition is an investment in the country’s future.

Call to Action: Protect the First 1,000 Days

It takes a village to raise a child. Join the Strong from the Start movement and be part of a collective effort to support mothers, protect early development, and help build a healthier next generation. Anmum aims to expand their support by partnering with LGUs and mommy communities to reach more moms from different SECs and spread awareness and educate the importance of maternal nutrition.
