  • He reasons that he’s becoming older and his health is his priority
  • He’s currently busy directing a stage play ‘Binondo: A Tsinoy Musical’

The renowned movie and TV director, Joel Lamangan, is now ready to let go of TV projects due to health concerns.

Lamangan is a director of countless movies and TV shows since the 90s. His body of work is considered as exemplary thus many artists love to work with him. His most known film is the long-running ‘Mano Po’ series that showcased the lives of Chinese-Filipino families.

Direk Joel was awarded best director three times for his film ‘Muling Umawit and Puso’ in 1995, ‘Mano Po’ in 2002, and ‘Mano Po 6: A Mother’s Love’ in 2009. He is known for genres like drama, family and comedy films. His last film was ‘Mano Po 8: My Great Love’ in 2017 and last TV project was ‘Bakit Manipis ang Ulap?’ in 2016.

The veteran director is on his twilight years, which made him to have that biggest decision of prioritizing his health. He is not quitting on being a director though. Currently, he directs theater productions instead.

The director mentioned that he is happy to direct a stage play called ‘Binondo: A Tsinoy Musical’ which focuses on the love story of a Filipina and a Chinese National fighting for their love during the troubled times of the Philippines and the Cultural Revolution in Beijing that both occurred in the 70s.

He also made it clear that the play is not political. Politics is just the setting.

“Kung pera lang, TV. Yun lang, madi-deds ka na lang agad. Sa edad natin, kung gusto mo mapadali ang buhay, mag-TV ka,” he said.
