MMFF 2020: Which movie is topping the box-office of the film festival?

The gross earning of the Metro Manila Film Festival entries are notably far compared to the previous years.

For the very first time, the MMFF organizers shifted to online platforms, going against the traditional screening in cinemas.

With this, it is expected that the income of the entries is considerably low compared to the previous years.

As of the third day of their screening, the MMFF films only garnered a gross income of 11 million, way far from yesteryears where films already earned about 200 million.

We have learned from ShowbizPortal.net that the movie ‘Fan Girl’ ranked number 1, owning one-half of the total earnings.

Even before the beginning of the film festival, many anticipated ‘Fan Girl‘ because of the frontal nudity scene of Paulo Avelino, which turns out that it was only a prosthetic.

Despite that, the movie continues to trend as netizens discover the unique plot and the outstanding performances of the lead characters, Paulo Avelino and Charlie Dizon.

The two eventually bagged the Best Actor and Actress awards of the film festival. Their movie also got most of the awards including Best Picture and Best Director (Antoinette Jadaone).

‘Fangirl’ is followed by ‘Mang Kepweng‘ in 2nd, ‘The Boy Foretold by the Stars’ in 3rd, ‘Pakboys: Takusa’ in4th, Number 5 is ‘The Missing‘ and in 6th is ‘Magikland’.

The remaining four drama-themed movies, ‘Isa Pang Bahaghari’, ‘Tagpuan’, ‘Coming Home’ and ‘Suarez: The Healing Priest’ ranked the lowest.

As MMFF shifted online, some factors of their low income included piracy. Since it is accessible to different devices, it can be reproduced and distributed illegally.

So, viewers are just waiting for ‘leaked’ copies of the movie to save money from paying the online stream. Some viewers may not also be tech-savvy, therefore they are not able to watch MMFF.

MMFF films are still available for streaming in Upstream and GMovies.
