Five ways to ace your online overseas job interview

Since the start of the pandemic, the majority of job interviews are conducted online. While virtual interviews with employers often require the same amount of preparation as in-person interviews, one thing remains the same – first impressions matter.

So if you’re preparing for an online interview for an overseas job, here are some pointers from TrueProfile.io, a platform that provides Filipino healthcare professionals around the world with the tools they need to secure a lucrative career abroad.

Test your computer and log in early. One of the downsides of doing interviews virtually is the potential connection issues or technical problems. To avoid this, do a test run on your computer at least a day or a few hours before your appointment and log into the video communications platform early. This way, you can immediately address any technical problems, and if needed, you can familiarize yourself with their chosen meeting platform.

Make sure your interview spot has good lighting. Look for an area in your home that provides good natural light so your interviewer can see your eyes and facial features clearly. Avoid lighting from behind or the side, as it will cause a glare, making it difficult for the interviewer to see you, and vice-versa.

Remove distractions. Make sure to remove any distractions that could potentially disrupt your job interview. Stay in a silent area, put your phone on silent mode, and turn off your email or social media notifications. If you think people at home may interrupt you, setting up your interview in another location might be best. Don’t jeopardize your interview with possible distractions from your location.

Dress professionally. Even if you won’t see your interviewer in person, it’s still proper to dress for success for the online interview. First impressions last, and often that includes wearing clothes that fit the job you are applying for and applying light makeup to accentuate your facial features. While doing the interview, don’t forget to sit up and smile to make yourself look confident and professional.

Be yourself. Job interviews can be daunting for anyone, so nerves are a normal reaction. Before the interview, try to take deep breaths to calm yourself. It might also help to list down all your strengths and weaknesses—possible questions that might be asked during the interview—to get your thoughts organized. You want to come across as sincere and authentic, and this job interview is your chance to show who you are as an individual.

Securing an online job overseas interview takes you one step closer to your dream of working abroad. But the work doesn’t stop there! Simultaneously, you must collect all the basic requirements, which include either a 1×1 or 2×2 ID picture, a PSA-authenticated birth certificate, a resume, college diploma, transcript of records, employer contract, marriage contract (if applicable), NBI clearance, a passport (valid for at least six months), as well as licenses and certifications. You must also apply for a working visa once the employer offers the job.

All these documents must be verified, which you can easily do with the help of TrueProfile.io. Through its blockchain technology, you no longer need to verify your documents over and over again when you apply. By signing up to become a member, TrueProfile.io offers its members several career solutions, including a free digital CV that can be shared with employers, regulators, and recruiters and can also be showcased on social media.

For interested applicants, create an account on TrueProfile (https://member.trueprofile.io/register), build a myTrueProfile page, and then set contact settings to the ‘Recommended’ option to attract new career opportunities.
