‘Dream Maker’ Review: Future pop stars in training

The winners of the reality search fly to Korea to be honed as the next global pop sensation.

ABS-CBN has been steadily re-affirming its place as the premier star-building powerhouse in the country, by continuously discovering new talents to join its already impressive roster of stars. With Dream Maker, the media giant intends not just to name the country’s future superstars, but to find the next Filipino pride to invade the global stage, as well. 62 trainees have been selected from the nationwide and regional auditions conducted prior to the studio auditions, and from there, the ones who will emerge as the best of the best will be sent to Korea to further train and become the next boy group to invade the global KPOP arena.

Dream Maker is unique, in a way that its winners are going straight away to the global stage by having its next level of training in South Korea, the cradle of K-POP entertainment.

Production-wise, there is much to commend already about the show hosted by Kim Chiu and Ryan Bang, who themselves, are both reality show alumni. The addition of several known personalities to the judging panel ensures that whoever reaches the finals, is fit to confront challenges in the global arena. The presence of Filipino mentors, Bailey May, Darren Espanto, and Angeline Quinto, guarantees the contestants won’t lose their proud Filipino identity once they face the international audience.

While this is a talent-reality search, some of the 62 grand chasers have to get early advantages. Because of their background, some trainees who may have been ahead of their fellow contestants in terms of showbiz exposure, social media popularity, and even their present talent agencies, are inevitably easier to notice.

But with such a number of contestants, it won’t be surprising if the editing department would have to put spotlights on deserving trainees. Decision-making in this part will ensure, only the best parts of the competition will be seen by the viewers, but even knowing which ones are truly the best, is a tricky job to fulfill.

Each mentor can give up to 100 points, which allows every auditionee to get a maximum of 900 points. The show’s ranking system is based on the score they earn from their auditions. Once another trainee scores higher, trainees with lower scores get bumped to lower ranks.  Complacency won’t get a trainee to the finals; consistency in learning will be a crucial factor.

As the group of Korean and Filipino mentors is tasked to hone these young dreamers to become fully prepared for the more intimidating level of training in South Korea, viewers can expect things to get more intense in the coming episodes.

Dream Maker airs on A2Z and Kapamilya Channel every Saturday and Sunday, at 9:30 PM.
