Manila Luzon scores Pinoy music mocking the experiences of Filipino queers

Drag Den PH host Manila Luzon made a forceful statement regarding certain Filipino music that she believes mocks the experiences of Filipino members of the LGBTQ community, contributing to a more challenging environment for them.

In the extro of the first episode of Drag Den PH Season 2, Luzon appeared to criticize specific Pinoy music that, in her view, ridicules the Filipino LGBTQ community, resulting in a hostile environment against them.

“Can’t say much for Filipino music though, especially there are a lot of Pinoy songs mocking the experiences of Filipino queer people through their lyrics. Which also made the streets harsher for us.” and i oop—”

Netizens who watched the show and saw the clip couldn’t resist listing songs that fit Luzon’s description.

In a tweet by @santiobcena, examples like “Modelong Charing” by Blackjack, “Chicksilog” by Kamikaze, “Awit” by Young Vito, “Gayuma” by Abra, and “Titibo-tibo” by Moira were mentioned.

@jan_vamp also tweeted, adding Parokya ni Edgar’s “This Guy’s In Love with You Pare” to the list, describing it as “the worst” song about the topic of LGBTQ.

“This Guy’s In Love With you Pare is the worst! Yung sa Chicksilog naman, I thought it was patama about men who use female sprites sa Ragnarok Online (RO) in order to get favors from male RO Players.”

While some netizens defended “Titibo-tibo,” stating it shouldn’t be included in the list, the original poster insisted that the song “strengthens the traditionalist perspective of many parents that gender identities and expression can be changed with the ‘right’ man or woman.”

I don't think titibo tibo belongs on the list, the lyrics is like a story with feelings that we cannot invalidate. And music is for all people, there are songs that we enjoy and do not enjoy. And that's what good in music, you can choose your playlist that you enjoy.

Interesting you see it that way. Gender identity is fluid indeed. But you have to look at the bigger picture. It also strengthens the traditionalist perspective of many parents that gender identities and expression can be changed with the "right" man or woman.

Meanwhile, the second season of Drag Den PH premiered on January 18, 2024, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. Showcasing ten contestants competing for the title of “Filipino’s Next Drag Supreme,” Season 2, according to director Rod Singh, will delve into more stories across the spectrum of the LGBTQ community and diverse economic backgrounds.

Don’t miss Drag Den PH Season 2 on Amazon Prime every Thursday at 7 p.m.
